Ch. 7.1 The Many Uses of Fluids

Fluids fluid – any substance that flows – examples: water; lava from a volcano; blood; honey; gases (such as carbon dioxide and oxygen)

Putting Fluids to Work fluids can make it easier to transport, process, and use different kinds of materials, even if those materials are solids

Fluids Can Transport Solids slurry – a mixture of water and solids – slurry technology is used to transport solids in water – examples: the paper you write on was once a slurry of wood pulp and water; hydroseeding; pouring cement; grouting tile

Fluids Can Hold Other Materials the ability of a fluid to hold other materials makes them useful in many applications – fluids holding abrasive particles are often used a cleaners for marble, metals, and teeth

Fluids Become Solids fluids are easy to move and they take the shape of their containers many of the solid objects that we use were originally prepared as fluids – examples: steel and cement

Other Uses of Fluids oil added to a car engine reduces friction, noise, heat, and wear paint applied to iron creates a barrier that prevents rust gases can be forced into a smaller volume to create force (such as air that pumps up your bicycle tires)
