1 Welcome to Kindergarten Curriculum Night!

2  The Common Core.. Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year all NC schools adopted the National Common Core Standards. NCCS has implemented these standards for every subject area in all classes! It is essential for your child to master these kindergarten skills in order to be successful with their future education.

4  Count to 100 by ones and tens Write numbers 0-20 Solve addition and subtraction problems ▪ KNOW MATH FACTS FLUENTLY Compare objects Identify, build, draw and name squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders and spheres Math Skills

5  Compare 2D and 3D shapes Sort objects We use the Math Expressions curriculum as our teaching guide. Students will not have math homework, but we encourage them to work on their math skills outside of school. Math Skills

7  Develop a knowledge of books and print Identify and name all upper and lower case letters Understand that print comes in a variety of forms Make connections to stories Learn to use letter-sound relationships to write Verbally retell key details of a story Language Arts Skills

8  Identify and use parts of speech Identify parts of a book and how to use each one Learn sounds for all letters Learn to read Identify elements of a story and retell Create questions Learn to write using different resources Verbally express opinions Language Arts Skills

10  Read with your child EVERY night ▪ The goal is 15-20 minutes. Practice letters and sounds Be sure your child can write his or her name in appropriate print (not all capital letters) Practice sight words Practice number recognition and writing numbers Please check your child’s binder every night. What can you do to help?

17  Classify useful sources of information (print, non-print, electronic, people). Understand the difference between text read for enjoyment and text read for information (fiction, non- fiction, resources with factual information). Use technology tools and skills to reinforce classroom concepts and activities. Understand the importance of good questions in conducting research. Remember safety and ethical issues related to the responsible use of information and technology resources. Technology Standards

21  Lazy 5 Ranch – Tentatively planned for November 6 th. (Parents may attend) Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville – January 15, 2016. (Parents may attend) Green Room Play “The Cat in the Hat”- February 26 th, 2016 (no parents) Letterland at Tweetsie – The date for this trip is not yet confirmed, but typically takes place in early May. (We strongly encourage parents to attend this trip.) Field trip t-shirts are $10 for students Field Trips
