2. European Exploration During the late 1400’s to early 1600’s, Spain, England, and France all tried to find a western sea passage that led to Asia. Instead they found a whole “new world” that had much to offer each country.

8. SOL Review Each explorer wanted to find a western sea route to Asia to find riches and spices. Each explorer wanted to claim new land for their countries. Columbus is credited with discovering the New World (although he never knew it). Ponce de Leon founded the oldest city in America-St. Augustine, FL. Jamestown, VA is the first permanent English settlement in the New World founded by Christopher Newport. Cartier founded the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, and Montreal. Newport sailed to the Fall Line near present-day Richmond and named Jamestown and the James River after King James I of England.
