6 EXAMPLE Jessie White Mario states that Italy would have been “free, independent, and united in 1849 had not monarchy stepped in and been more concerned with their own kingdoms rather than the good of the Italian people.” (Doc.9) Italy delayed unification because the leaders of the Italian provinces were against it. Because document 9 was written by an English journalist to the editor of the New York Times, a U.S. newspaper, the author is most likely trying to play on the beliefs of the American people who naturally favor a republic and value the ideals of freedom. He is trying to generate support for Italian unification.
