1 Topic vs. Theme Monday, November 10, 2014 Regular MYP

2 Quick Write: Form #3 or Free Write  You may choose to finish formative #3 from Friday (with claim, evidence, and explanation).  Many of you need to find a second piece of evidence (with tagline, quotation, and citation) and explain the evidence (with the meaning of the quotation and how it ties back to the claim).  I will recollect them after the quick write time.  Or in your notebook you may do a free write. You must write coherent thoughts in English for 5 minutes.

3 Objective, Agenda, & Homework  Objective: Students will distinguish between topic and theme and identify themes in texts we have recently read.  Agenda:  Quick Write  Video  Notes  Themes  Homework: Study Greek roots 1-28 for the final.

4 Focus Lesson: Theme vs. Topic  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4qME64S kxM – Take notes on the video clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4qME64S kxM  A topic is the main subject of a work of literature.  Love  Cruelty  Friendship  The theme is the lesson about the topic.  True love conquers all.  Cruelty can often be a result of pride.  True friends will accept you for who you are.

5 Focus Lesson: Theme  Theme: The lesson or message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. It is the central idea of a work of literature.  Theme must be written as a complete sentence because it is a thought about life or humanity.  It must be written as a general statement.  Theme may be revealed by:  The work’s title  Key phrases or statements about big ideas  The ways the characters change and the lessons they learn about life

6 Focus Lesson: Theme Examples  Examples:  Pride, love, and cruelty are often intermingled in human relationships. –- “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst  People care more about self-preservation than the lives of others. – “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson  Total equality is dangerous because our differences are important. – “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut

7 Example: The Taming of the Shrew Topics:  Love  Marriage  Wit  Transformation  Language and Communication  Social Classes  Family Themes:  Marriage is really only about economic gain for both people and families.  In marriage, love is less important than social class.  Wit is a necessary part of communication for people to get what they want.  Anyone can make a transformation if he or she wants to change.

8 Together: “Richard Cory” Topics  Wealth  Acceptance in Society  Loneliness  Friendship Themes?  With a group of 3, what are some themes from “Richard Cory” about the topics to the left?

9 On Your Own: Hamlet Topics  Death  Honor  Dreams  Fear Themes?  On your own, what are some themes from Hamlet about the topics to the left?  Share with a group and write down a 2 nd theme.
