2 Quick Write: Gratitude Quotation “Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” ▫–Epictetus (55-135) ▫Stoic Philosopher Read the quotation and write a response. ▫Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? ▫Do you have few wants, great possessions, neither, or both? ▫Do you consider yourself wealthy? Why or why not?

3 Objective, Agenda, and Homework Objective: ▫Students will practice identifying the Greek roots and their meanings. ▫Students will synthesize information from 3 texts into 1 paragraph about the experience of homelessness. Agenda: ▫Quick Write ▫Finish Writing Synthesis #1 or Greek Root Flash Cards ▫Greek Root Review Game Homework: ▫Study your Greek roots for 5 minutes. ▫Read for 15-20 minutes.

4 Greek Roots 28-30 Using the word lists I gave you before the week of Thanksgiving, look up the part of speech and definition of ONE WORD FOR EACH ROOT. Then, draw a visual. ▫Look up one word for hetero. ▫Look up one word for homo. ▫Look up one word for poly. If you were not here Friday, November 22, then look at the power point for that day on my website to get the 3 new roots with their meanings and word lists. Quiz is Friday!

5 Finishing Synthesis #1 Remember, you need to use 3 texts. ▫Soul Moon Soup ▫“Inocente” ▫1 of the 3 poems Your paragraph should be 11-14 sentences. ▫Thesis Statement ▫3-4 sentences about Text 1 (Soul Moon Soup) ▫3-4 sentences about Text 2 (“Inocente”) ▫3-4 sentences about Text 3 (poem) ▫Conclusion Sentence

6 Tips DoDon’t Include page numbers for in- text citations Use generic 3 rd person pronouns (he, she, it, they, people, person, anyone, everyone, and more) Use transition words and phrases Use direct evidence in the form of quotations and specific facts Explain the connection between your evidence and thesis Use: I, me, my, you, your, we, us, our Summarize the article or video (instead of using specific quotations and facts) Leave evidence hanging with no explanation of its meaning or connection to the thesis

7 Greek Root Flash Cards Work on your Greek root flash cards. ▫Make sure you put the root on one side and the meaning on the other side to help you study. ▫After you write the root and the meaning, draw a picture that represents the meaning on the same side as the root. Then, it will trigger your memory about the meaning.

8 Review Game Group Review: ▫Each group will get a white board and marker. ▫One person will be the writer, but the writer must rotate. ▫I will read either the meaning of a root or the root itself.  Write the root if I say the meaning.  Write the meaning if I say the root.
