Value of Leadership –Related to the success of the initiative, person or organization –Based on person’s need for organizing –It requires: An event Progressive encouragement and support Which leads to bonding, divisions and transitions that guide (influence) behaviors –In the biological world, it requires survival organization initiation and facilitation = cellular interactions –It also requires social skills or relationships awareness of potential self or others

Leadership is an open concept that probably will never be conclusively defined: –Taking charge –Helping others achieve –Problem solving –Directing resources for a purpose –Showing the way –Facilitating actions of a group –Exercising power and influence –Making things happen –Coordinating a collective (interactive) effort

Components of Leadership Is a process between leader and follower Involves influence that affects others Occurs in the context of groups It also involves the attainment of goals Within the context in which it happens: 1.Hunter-gatherer 2.Agricultural 3.Industrial 4.Technological 1.Select period 2.You are leader 3.Select goal 4.How will you get Information 5. What is your perception & behavior of the role of leader

Leadership Theories: –Trait Theories and Measurement Movement L = one unquestionable in charge with higher traits the use of measurement of traits no specific characteristic emerged –Behavioral Theories and Leadership Styles Gain wealth through competition maximize profits leader (bureaucrat) : “don’t think just do” efficiency, productivity, etc. –Bureaucratic Control Era of depression and nationalism manage large systems with clear boundaries of what to do and how to do it…. –Situational Leadership 60’s & 70’s more egalitarian view of society informed leadership person could be a leader depending on circumstances…no specific skills –Transformational Leader 80’s non-leader leadership…many leaders informed by motivation, morality and idealism characteristic of the entire organization –Systemic Leadership 80’s & 90’s management gurus, system thinking, teaming and strategic planning

Leaders in the 21 st century need to challenge old assumptions –Creating new categories of thinking –Openness to different sources and points of view –Flexibility and adaptability Primed by a sense of context adjusting to the events of the past decade & engaging in new ideas Primed by the sense of capacity clarifying and defining previous assumptions = construction of new mental models Primed by a sense of alignment rely on intuition or insight from trial and error align leadership behavior to intelligence connecton with other leaders to achieve goals Primed by a sense of advantage advantage of information (historic and current content)

New definition: –Mindful leaders understand and apply their own intelligence –To the understanding and the application of intelligence throughout their organization –To achieve meaningful purpose –Premises: Organization = 2 or more people gathering Human potential of any organization = greatest asset In order to achieve this asset, minds in the organization must be fully engaged Actions of a leader can influence whether an organization can be intelligence friendly Knowledge about the brain essential in all organizations
