5. Compound Sentences
Contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clause.
My brother does the dishes and takes out the trash; my chores include vacuuming and dusting.

The ice-covered sidewalk was slippery, and several people fell.

7. Practice
Write the sentence. Underline each independent clause. Circle the comma and conjunction OR semicolon.
Mark Twain wrote fiction, and T.S. Eliot wrote poetry.
Some students ate in the cafeteria; others went outside in the sunshine.
The waves were enormous, yet the surfer rescued his surfboard.

8. Simple or Compound? I went outside and looked at the sky.
My brother and I noticed dark and luminous clouds.
The sky looked threatening, so I expected a storm.
Write a simple sentence.
Write a compound sentence.

9. Complex Sentences
Contain one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause (remember: sub. Clauses begin with either a relative pronoun or subordinating conjunction.)
List the common relative pronouns
List 10 of the common subordinating conjunctions.

10. Complex Examples I often go to the library because I like to read.
Because I like to read, I often go to the library.

11. Since I was five years old, I have read in bed at night.
Underline the INDEPENDENT clause ONCE and the SUBORDINATE clause TWICE.
Since I was five years old, I have read in bed at night.
For my twelfth birthday, I received A Light in the Attic, which is a book of poems.
Before I go to sleep, I sometimes read my favorite poems to my little brother.
Mr. Morales, who is my English teacher, encouraged me to be a writer.

12. Compound or Complex?
My mom drinks coffee because she likes hot beverages.
My mom will drink tea, but she prefers coffee.
Because she likes hot beverages, my mom drinks coffee.
Write a compound sentence.
Write a complex sentence.

13. Compound-Complex Sentences
Contain at least two independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.
Independent: I will decorate for the party
You can prepare the food
Subordinate: when we get to my house
Compound-Complex Sentence:
When we get to my house, I will decorate for the party, and you can prepare the food.

14. We cleaned the house after the party was over, and it was spotless.
Practice: Write each sentence. Draw a rectangle around the INDEPENDENT clauses and a cloud around the SUBORDINATE clauses.
When we planned our holiday party, we planned a small one, and we invited only a few friends.
Before we bought supplies, we made a guest list; yet we still had to make several trips to the store.
We cleaned the house after the party was over, and it was spotless.

15. Complex or Compound-Complex?
If you‘ve never tried Indian curry, try some of Usha’s.
Several small herds of mustangs roam these hills; we’re going to search for them until it gets dark.
They don’t have the book we need because it is sold out.

16. Form Compound-Complex Sentences
Write a simple sentence.
Turn your simple sentence into a compound sentence.
Now, add a subordinate clause to your compound sentence.
