1 Renaissance Art Welcome to the world of Renaissance art. During the period between 1350 and 1603 artists created magnificent pieces of art that symbolized an age and exemplified the human potential. You will be required to identify these pieces and understand their connections to art history, the politics of the age and their connections to the emergence of the modern era.

2 The Italian Renaissance The Italian Renaissance:1350 – 1527 This era was a revival of European art and literature under the influence of classical styles (Greco-Roman) in the 14 th – 16 th century. The first artist to transition into Renaissance tendencies was Giotto (1276-1337) Masacio (1401-28?) the student of Giotto would follow into the renaissance style. Donatello (1386-1466) the sculptor would create the first nude sculptor similar to those of ancient Greece and Rome.

21 The Northern Renaissance The Northern Renaissance:1450-1600 As the Renaissance ideas spread out of Italy, they mingled with northern traditions. Many humanists there were more interested in religious ideas than in the secular themes popular in Italy. Albrecht Durer is perhaps the most famous of these northern Renaissance artists because of the influence his works had so many others. (i.e. Hans Holbein the Younger)
