Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 1 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting ERD ITWG Emerging Research Devices Working Group Face-to-Face Meeting MEMORY DISCUSSION Victor Zhirnov and Rainer Waser - Facilitating Grand Hotel Steigenburger Petersberg XXXXXX Room Number YYYY Koenigswinter (near Bonn), Germany Wednesday April 2, 2008 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 2 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Hiro Akinaga/ AIST Joe Brewer / U Florida Muralidhar Ramachandran / Freescale Rainer Waser / U Aachen Victor Zhirnov / SRC ERD Memory Editorial Team

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 3 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Objectives To discuss new possible memory candidates –Nanowire Phase-change memory –Magnetic Race-Track Memory –Spin-torque Transfer Memory To develop quantitative estimates of performance for the various types of memories –We need to discuss and agree on the methodology we use and the numbers we obtained –It is highly desirable to document the results, ideally as a journal publication

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 4 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting New Memory Candidates Nanowire Phase-change memory Magnetic Domain Wall Motion memory –Magnetic race-track memory Stuart Parkin, “Magnetic race-track – a novel storage class spintronic memory”, Intern J. Mod. Physics B 22 (2008) 117 Spin torque transfer MRAM Should we consider storage-class memories in ERD? Does is belong to PIDS or to ERD? MRAM has been transferred from ERD to PIDS in 2003 Does is belong to PIDS or to ERD? PC-RAM has been transferred from ERD to PIDS in 2003

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 5 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Selection criteria for new technology entries candidates

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 6 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Emerging Research Devices Introduction and Scope Cast a broad net to introduce readers to device and architecture concepts for information processing --- Concept Identify Include Stimulate --- not hardened solutions --- not endorse --- and quantify --- and assess/critique

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 7 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Emerging Research Devices Evaluation Criteria Outline Cautions –Do not over-constrain the problem based on present day understandings –Sufficiently advanced technologies will create their own applications. New technologies cannot necessarily be justified by current day applications.

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 8 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting “Minimum Requirement” Criteria The ‘minimum requirements’ criteria for a new technology to be considered as a candidate for ERD chapter is sufficient research activity, e.g. –the technology is explored by several research groups, or –There is an extensive research activity of one group –There are at least 2 publications in peer-reviewed journals

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 9 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting General ‘Loose’ Criteria Potential for scaling –Roadmap Driver On-chip integrated solutions –Potential for embedded applications Outstanding research issues exist –Guidelines for the research community and government funding agencies Not in production –Innovation phase

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 11 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Meeting Outcome The end goal is to update and significantly improve the ERD Chapter, and, in particular, the Emerging Research Memory Section, for the 2009 Road Map.

Work in Progress --- Not for Publication 12 ERD WG 4/2/08 Koenigswinter FxF Meeting Welcome!
