Třebíč hospital Architecture in the construction

History of hospital care The first hospital in Trebíč dates back to 1405. It was called a neighborly hospital. Barbers, healers, and those times dentists provided care. The Moravien Brethern (United Brethern) had their own hospital in Jejkov quarter till 1640. Another hospital was situated in Sirotčí street near the town center.

Jewish hospital It was built on the border of two quarters Podklášteří and Zámostí in 1852. It was called Krankenhaus at this time. This hospital was for the Jews only, with the capacity of 24 patients. It was used as a Jewish poorhouse later. After the World War I and adding one more floor, the hospital served as a tenement (a building devided into flats especially in a poor area of a town).

Construction of hospital In January 1900, plans were submitted to the county and in March, were approved. The building was finished in 1902. On 1st January 1903, the hospital was officially opened. Its name was General Public Hospital of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Architectural style The hospital was built in Neoclassical style (used from mid-18th to 19th century). It emphasizes symmetry, geometry and regularity.

The beginnings of hospital J. Bakeš, who had worked at Vienna Surgery Clinic in Brno, was the first senior doctor. However, he treated only patients who could pay. Two more doctors worked there and also 12 nuns. They also cooked and were responsible for the washing.

The main extensions The pavilion for pulmonary diseases was finished between 1917 – 1918. Later there was a department of internal medicine. In 1926, this building was extended eastwards. Garages and flats on the east side of the complex were completed in 1935. A large kitchen with a high chimney was built at the beginning of the 1940s. In 1944, a wooden structure was added - transpiration and respiration diseases ward.

The hospital has had nearly the same form since 1952. In 1977, a new building of maternity hospital was finished. In 1981 old trees from the hospital park were cut down to make space for a new surgery building. Surgery was opened in 1985 together with new operating theaters.

A central laboratory was opened in 2007. There are laboratories of biochemistry, hematology and mikrobiology. There is also a blood bank.

Problems with building There have been several problems with competion. The first attempt to compete the complex comes from 1939-1942. A concept was created at that time. Only one structure from the concept was realised – economic centre. In 1950 a complex analysis of the hospital condition was done. It was suggested to do reconstruction and large extensions.

Construction of completely a new object started in 1975. The building should have served as a health centre (policlinic) – called Vltavínská. They did not build any new hospital parts because of finance. This was also the reason why they continued in reconstruction of the old hospital and its extention.

There is at least one more reason why building plans for the hospital are complicated. Except money, it is the location – the hospital is situated on a sloping land between the river Jihlava and a busy road with a railway track near it.

However, building of a new pavilion for mothers and babies began in 2009. The construction was completed in 2011.

The construction was realized for 320 million crowns by the local county (Kraj Vysočina) with the support of the European Union.
