2  What is a student owned device?  Finding a happy medium.  If classrooms allow student owned devices what policies and rules would change?  Cellphones in class: Pros and cons  Laptops and iPads: Pros and cons  IPods and music devices: pros and cons

3  Devices that students bring from an outside source into the classroom Cellphone (iPhone, smartphone, etc.) IPad or tablet device Laptop IPod, MP3

4 Making sure students are protected from inappropriate communications and materials on the internet and as well as students and teachers to being able to access the many resources the internet offers.

6 Schools used to use a very strict blocking and filtering program but it is now slowly evolving where it is the students responsibility to learn how to properly use the internet and take responsibility for their online behavior.

7 This orientation has changed because the internet allows the classroom to communicate in many new ways. Things like:  Blogs  Wikis  Youtube  Google Docs Teachers now use these resources because they are so easy to access for most students with internet, as well as a way to communicate between classmates and the teacher.

8  In some districts AUPs or Acceptable Use Policies are starting to be updated and changed from “ acceptable use”, to “responsible use” policies.

9 1. Do you think cellphones should be allowed in the classroom? What is the reasoning? 2. Do you think personal laptops or iPads should be allowed in the classroom? What is the reasoning? 3. Do you think iPods should be allowed in the classroom? What is the reasoning?

11  Depending on the school district they might: Forbid cellphones Limit the use of cellphones (lunch and breaks) Making use of the cell phones for instructional classroom purposes. What was your high school like growing up?

12  Risks associated with cellphones in class: Cyber bullying Sexting Cheating on exams/tests Inappropriate use of the camera/video camera

13  Phones must remain on silent or vibrate  The phone remains face up on corner of desks  Calls from family members are only to be accepted during class  If caught using the phone inappropriately the teacher should have a policy or rule set up, it could be that they lose it for the rest of the day or to get it back their parents have to come pick it up.

16 Like the cell phone a laptop or iPad can have positive and negative effects in a classroom. Things like distractions and inappropriate use are the key concern but if all students bring their own devices the pros and cons go way deeper then that.

17 ProsCons 1.Can lead to motivation to learn, independent research, and better student discussions. 2.It can bridge the digital divide, not all students can afford laptops but if the school can provide the student with one while in class they can keep up to date. 3.Allow direct access to internet so doing projects becomes easier. 4.More cost effective then library books. 5.As a teacher you can see students work and progress. 1.If the school does not set strict rules then the laptops become more of a toy and not a learning tool. 2.If students are bringing and using school laptops theft can rise because students can steal them. 3.Becomes easier for students to plagiarize. 4.The internet can give false information when students are working on papers and projects, but books are usually very reliable in the information they are giving. 5.Only some students can afford laptops and some schools cannot provide every student with their own device.

19 Nowadays most students have an IPod or some music device. Most classroom teachers do not allow these devices in the class but there are positive and negative consequences. IPods do so much more then just play music but have apps that can do almost anything.

20 ProsCons 1.Some students find that the music calms them allowing to focus on school work. 2.Something to do during down time or riding the bus. 3.Can be used to record class lectures for review. 4.Calculator, dictionary, etc. are all apps that can help the student while doing work. 5.Some students think it makes them more social because they get to share the types of music they listen to with a friend (two separate headphones). 1.Students get distracted and do not pay attention to the teachers lesson. 2.Students can download and bring inappropriate pictures and songs that can be offensive to other students. 3.Can be used to cheat on exams. 4.Can be a target for theft. 5.Students disengage and become less social with the class. 6.Would rather listen to the music and play games then focus on work. 7.Can be a distraction to other students around them.
