2. Grade Point Average
The grade point average (GPA) is a calculated average of the letter grades you earn in school following a 0 to 4.0 or 5.0 scale. Every semester, you’ll receive a GPA based on the grades you earned in all of your classes during that semester. Throughout high school, you’ll also maintain a cumulative GPA, which is an ongoing average of all your semester one and two grades beginning with freshman year.

3. Unweighted GPA
The unweighted GPA is the average of all class grades based on a 4.0 scale. If the student earned an “A” in an advanced English class, the unweighted grade would still be a the corresponding number on standard grade conversion charts-- instead of, for example, a 4.5. Regardless of class level, each class is graded on the same point system. Things can get a bit confusing when schools have an unweighted scale but still offer and “A+” that is worth 4.3 points. While still unweighted, this GPA is higher than a 4.0.

5. Weighted GPA
A weighted GPA is based on the simple idea that some high school classes are much harder than others, and these hard classes should carry more weight. In other words, an 'A' in AP Calculus represents a much greater accomplishment than an 'A' in remedial algebra.
In an effort to acknowledge the effort that goes into challenging courses, many high schools weight the grades for AP, honors and accelerated courses. The weighting isn't always the same from school to school, but a typical model on a 4-point grade scale might look like this.

A student who got straight 'A's and took nothing but AP classes could have a 5.0 GPA on a 4-point scale. High schools will often use these weighted GPAs for determining class rank -- they don't want students to rank high just because they took easy classes.

8. College GPA
Colleges report GPA (grade point average) on a 4.0 scale. The top grade is an A, which equals 4.0. This is the standard scale at most colleges, and many high schools use it.
Because there is no consistency in the way high school’s calculate a student’s over all grade point average (GPA), many institutions recalculate the GPA. In some cases, the GPAs are “weighted” with extra points being given for honor or AP courses. In other cases, the GPA are all “unweighted”, with all courses treated equally and no extra points given for more challenging courses. Some institutions simply count the number of honors, AP, and other advanced - level courses. And still others simply reorganize the transcript information as that its easy to see coverage by subject and/ trends over the student’s school career.

10. Bright Futures GPA
Evaluation for Bright Futures includes an unrounded weighted high school GPA (calculated to two decimal places) in the 16 college-preparatory credits. The following courses are weighted .25 per semester course or .50 per year course in the calculation of the GPA: Advanced Placement (AP), Pre-International Baccalaureate (Pre-IB), International Baccalaureate (IB), Honors, Pre-Advanced International Certificate of Education (Pre-AICE), Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) or academic Dual Enrollment. For example, whereas an ‘A’ equals 4 quality points for an un-weighted year-long course, an ‘A’ would equal 4.5 quality points for a weighted year-long course.
