Anne of Green Gables: Film Adaptation Anne of Green Gables: Film Adaptation

Major Character: Anne Shirley Liliana Mumy Anne Shirley is the main character in the novel, Anne of Green Gables. She is a feisty redhead who loves to dream. When she first arrives at Green Gables, her gender is a problem for her adoptive parents, Matthew and Marilla because they were wanting to receive a boy to help out with the farm. Because Anne is so loveable, they decide to keep her. Anne can be very rambunctious and this causes her to get into trouble. I chose Liliana Mumy to play the role of Anne. I imagined Anne to look the exact way Liliana does with her red hair and green eyes. She has starred in Cheaper by the Dozen 1 & 2, and has played a mischievous sibling who is good at heart. This is how I imagined Anne would look and act like while reading the book.

Minor Character: Marilla Cuthbert Meryl Streep Marilla Cuthbert is an older women who with her brother Matthew decide to adopt a boy to help with their farm. When Anne arrives Marilla is adamant that she would not be staying, but changes her mind at the last second. She is very strict on Anne and doesn’t allow her to dream for very long. Although she doesn’t show it, she loves Anne very much. She can be classified as a “bitter old woman” but Marilla is very kind at heart. I chose Meryl Streep to play Marilla because she looks exactly the way I pictured Marilla to look. In her previous role, The Devil Wears Prada, she plays a manipulative, cruel women on the outside, but on the inside she is a sweet women who cares about everyone. This is how I imagined Marilla to be in Anne Of Green Gables.

Minor Character: Diana Berry Bailee Madison Diana Berry is Anne Shirley’s best friend. She and Anne are inseparable and often refer to each other as “bosom friends.” Diana and Anne are complete opposites as Anne is very talkative and mischievous, while Diana is very quiet and likes to be on her best behaviour almost always. Although they are both so different, they count on each other for everything. I chose Bailee Madison to play Diana because of her role in Bridge to Terabitha. She plays a little sister who is wary of her actions and try's to always be a good girl. She is quiet and rarely misbehaves. The way Bailee looks is also how I thought Diana would look. This is why I chose Bailee Madison to play Diana Berry.

Setting/Location The story of Anne of Green Gables takes place in Alberta in a beautiful white house with lots of flowers and trees. It is very serene and peaceful. This is the specific house I would chose to film Anne of Green Gables in. It is how I imagined the house to look, with its green shutters, porch and trees. The barn I chose is how I pictured the barn in the novel to look like and many of the scenes are done in the barn. This house and barn is where I would film Anne of Green Gables.

Most important scene The death of Matthew Cuthbert The death of Matthew Cuthbert is the most important scene in Anne of Green Gables, because it tells us how the rest of Anne’s life will be. Anne had been planning on going to Queens to earn her teaching degree, when Matthew had a heart attack and died. Marilla decides that she will sell Green Gables because she cannot look after it because she is getting old and she has no money to hire a farm boy. Anne is devastated at the thought of losing her first real home, that she decides to take some courses at home and live at Green Gables with Marilla. This is the most important scene because it shows that Anne would never give up her first real home and puts others in front of her. This shows her true character and explains how the rest of her life will be.
