2 The Beginnings  It all began in New England … the Ocean State to be exact  White Northup & Black Northup family  Census Records 1650s  Several Generations of White Northups before Mintus' master --> Captain Henry Northup  Relocation after the war

3 His Father: Mintus  Issue with correct dates of birth and death  Slavery and Manumission  Relocation & Labor  Suffrage  Death

4 His Mother: Susannah  A lot of unknown information  Quadroon  Societal Status  Genealogy (Bowman --> 1791- 1847)

5 His Wife: Anne Hampton  Of African, Native American, and White descent  From a free Black family  Born in 1808 and 1 of 6 children  Occupations: domestic servant & cook (many places)  Married Solomon on Christmas Day 1828

7 The Violin in Solomon's Life  Began to learn at a young age  More than just something fun to pass the time  Integral part of his survival (both enslaved and free)  Provides supplemental income
