3 Rights? What rights? Why? New Americans wanted certain rights protected. Why? Past experience of abuse by England.

4 What and where are these rights? The so-called Bill of Rights was added to the constitution after it was ratified (as amendments/changes) Why? The rights and freedoms proposed were considered highly unusual and controversial. Few nations had given these rights to citizens.

6 The Rights  Rights were listed as a series of articles [Amendments].  There were ten (10) altogether.  Amendment 1: freedom of Religion, Assembly,, Petition, Press and Speech R.A.P.P.S.  Amendment 2: right to bear arms [have weapons]  Amendment 3: freedom from quartering  Amendment 4: freedom from unlawful search and seizure  Amendment 5: right to justice; freedom from double jeopardy; self incrimination, eminent domain  Amendment 6: right to a fair trial with a lawyer  Amendment 7: right to a jury trial  Amendment 8: protection from cruel and unusual punishment  Amendment 9: rights ratified anywhere shall not reduce those listed here  Amendment 10: any rights not listed left to states or people

7 Additional information on concepts  1 st Amendment Assembly [means to have meetings], Petition [means to be able to criticize or complain to or about the government].  3 rd Amendment Quartering [means to provide housing especially for soldiers].  4 th Amendment Seizure [means for the government (law enforcement) to take property from citizens without permission].

8 Additional information on concepts  5th Amendment Double Jeopardy [means to not be put on trial for the same incident or offense after being found not guilty by a judge or jury]. Self-incrimination [means people accused of crimes not being forced or required to testify on themselves in court or to law enforcement]. Eminent Domain [means the government has the right to take citizens’ property against their will as long as it provides a fair price and has a legitimate reason for doing so such as a road, school, fire house, etc.].

9 Assignment: Advertisement Flyer Directions: Make believe you are a person living during the time before the Bill of Rights and create a poster that will convince Americans that a freedom or right must be added to the U.S. Constitution because it is very important in your opinion. Your job is to: (1) Select a single right or freedom [from the 10 listed] you think is highly important or essential. (2) Create a poster describing and explaining why it should be added to the Constitution as an amendment since it is not yet available to citizens. (3) You must be convincing, compelling and creative [neatness counts]. (4) Every effort should be made to make your flyer look as if it was from the late 1700s. (5) It can be handwritten or composed using the computer [Whichever the student believes he/she can do best and on time!].
