1 English as a Second Language Virginia State Licensure & Master Degree Program

2 About FAST TRAIN Programs Began in 1990 as a cooperation with VDOE, US State Department, and MASON 1,200 graduates teaching in over 40 countries Programs include: – Elementary Education, ESL Education, Special Education, and Advanced IB Studies

3 ESOL Endorsement Program Seven courses for VA State Add-on Endorsement – Topics include Multicultural Education, Assessment, Language Acquisition, Literacy, and Linguistics – Course schedule is dictated by the cohort – you decide if evening, online, or intensive courses work best for your group

4 ESOL Endorsement Program 7 Courses 6 credits of a foreign language (may be undergraduate) Passing scores on the VCLA test Passing scores on the Praxis 1 exam or qualifying SAT/ACT scores (see website for scores)

5 Requirement for Licensure For non-licensed teachers or instructional assistants, you will also need: EDUC 511: Intro to Teaching This course will be done on your own during the course of the program (online or on campus in the summer) EDCI 790: Internship

6 ESOL Optional M.Ed. Program Two additional courses + elective for M.Ed. – Master’s Degree in Education: Curriculum & Instruction Requires intensive summer session M.Ed. coursework is completed after endorsement courses and after the elective

7 Coursework Assignments allow you to explore issues facing language learners in your school Fieldwork Required – Complete 20 hours in your classroom (potentially) or by working with your colleagues in the cohort

8 Admissions Requirements Full Admission Bachelor’s Degree (with at least a 3.0 in last 60 credits) Online Application Department Form Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities Praxis I or qualifying SAT/ACT Scores Letters of Rec & Goals Statement
