1 Early Literacy Project Smart Goal Project Outcomes 06-07

2 Early Literacy Project SMART GOALS In one school year students will… By May 31, 2007 increase their reading rate to: - 40 - 60 wcpm. Gr. 1 - 80 - 100 wcpm Gr. 2 - 100 - 180 wcpm Gr. 3-5 at their independent reading level as measured on running records (Reithaug) Comprehend text read at grade level as measured by the DRA by May 31st, 2007

3 Early Literacy Project SMART GOAL cont’d…. By May 31, 2007 Kindergarten students will…. – increase their phonemic awareness skills and grapheme knowledge as measured by the SRSD Early Literacy Assessment Screen to at or above 80%

4 Project Outcomes  To support kindergarten, grade 1, 2, and 3 teachers in explicit instruction of language both through assessment and through instruction.  To build capacity in classroom teachers in the assessment of the graphophonic language cueing system, which is critical for early readers to learn rules of language necessary to support early reading skills.

5 Project Outcomes… cont’d  To assist teachers in targeting potential early reading difficulties by using the DRA and the SRSD Early Literacy Screen.  To establish benchmarks of expected behaviors in the use of the graphophonic cueing systems.

6 Project Outcomes…cont’d  To standardize classroom teachers expectations for acceptable levels of mastery as identified in benchmark behaviors  Through mentorship extend the capacity of other primary teachers to apply the teaching and assessment strategies of critical language cueing systems

7 Project Outcomes…cont’d  To be able to use common assessment data to plan classroom instruction
