Hand tools for hand devices Making learning mobile

Project Deliverables Status Research how we can transform existing resources √ Transforming assessment strategy√ A training program to upskill teachers - 20 staff. √ One eLearning unit as an exemplar√ One interactive print/eBook as an exemplar √ Trialled with thirty students√ Rolled out 300 apprentices over 6 months. Delirious..

Context: CIII in Cabinet Making Traditional approach to training Barriers successful completion: –limited engagement: – with the employer –workplace-based learning –workplace-based assessment –Attendance lower priority due to off-site time required –Accessing online learning materials anywhere/anytime –Increased pressures on physical training space within the TAFE

Student Outputs: Mobility Research: 72% trade students use smartphones 99% have a mobile phone Resources were designed and developed Students were given iPads Delivery strategy re-designed Assessment tools developed BYOD - Personal devices can be integrated Aim: Improve our retention rates by meeting identified learning needs.

Considerations Accessibility and useability Interaction with LMS (Moodle) Reduce photocopying and printing Desirable : Fast and reliable Many people on site use them Can be used online or off-line Multimedia capture iPads are cool

Issues iPads don’t have file system Flash not supported in iOS Need to upskill users (teachers and students) Limited or no experience developing ePUBs Becoming aware (through trial and error) of the idiosyncrasies of using the iBook Author App Ensuring file size is manageable

Background/Challenges prior to this project Researching different software apps to find which was appropriate to the project's needs Being responsible for the look and feel of the publication as well as the development of the assets, including the limitations of the inbuilt 'widgets' (interactivities), and where necessary, reworking the storyboard to allow for these restrictions Ensuring file size was managable, yet bearing in mind image quality; particularly with regard to video compression

Solutions Centre based iPad Planner Worked in partnership to develop assessment tools Developed eLearning and ePub Developed activities in Java script Used online assessments – quizzes, online assignments in Moodle, My Moodle app Co-taught prototype during Stage 1

What we did…

Useful Apps Notability: $0.99 Pages: $10.49 iMovie: $5.49 My Moodle: free VidEditor: Free iBooks: Free

My Moodle app Images from camera roll can be uploaded in Private files area Record video, sound, take photos in app Insert these files into forums, wikis, online assignment, upload in assignment
