2 Stuck in the Mud About the Game: Stuck in the Mud is the ‘classic’ chasing and dodging game that promotes spatial awareness and the ability to accelerate, change direction and move into space. Rules: 1.All runners to remain in the coned off square. 2.3 “Taggers” to carry a cone in their hand. 3.1 st whistle = runners escape, 2 nd whistle = “Taggers” chase, 3 rd whistle = game over (when runners look tired). 4.Repeat as many times as possible with different “Taggers”. Variations: 1.Two runners need to pass through legs to save a “Tagged” runner. 2.Pass through legs and then shake hands / high five etc.

1 Obstacle Course About the Game: Our Obstacle Course allows our young athletes to practice many of the skills they have learnt in PE, and particularly gymnastics, this year. Balancing, climbing, jumping and rolling skills are all put to good use over our challenging course. Rules: 1.There are 4 groups and 4 Obstacle Courses. Runners must wait until the runner ahead has cleared “The Wall” before starting their run. Start Line Balance Beams Tunnel The Wall Slalom Over Low HurdleRoll under bar

4 Football About the Game: During Terms 1 and 2 the children have been slowly developing their skills in the world’s favourite game. Dribbling, stopping, changing direction, finding space and sending the ball to a partner will all be demonstrated. Rules: 1.One ball for each player. 2.On a signal the players have 45 seconds to score as many points as possible by dribbling through the coned gates without touching them. 3.Try to beat your score with further attempts. Variations: 1.Stop ball on signal. 2.Swap ball with a passing player on signal. 3.Turn and move into space on signal. Colour coded, coned gates.

3 The Sprint About the Game: All children like to test their speed and race their friends. It’s also important however to learn to run straight and respond to different starting signals. Take your marks…………………… Rules: 1.In groups of 6, runners race down the track, staying in lane, to break the finish tape. 2.Runners can then return slowly down the outside of the track to line up and have another turn. 3.Take your marks, set, go ! 4.After all runners have had a turn, change the start position: on front, on back, backwards etc. 5.All runners waiting for their heat must be behind the waiting line. Waiting line Start Line Finish Line

6 Hockey About the Game: During Year 1 and 2 the children will start to handle sports equipment with more control and accuracy. Controlling a ball using the correct grip on a hockey stick is fun to do and beautiful to watch. The under-arm throw is also an important tool and the change of activity forces the players to think about their grip on the stick each time they pick it up. Rules: 1.Players are shown the “thumbs down” grip and can pick up a stick and start to dribble through the gates. 2.After 5 gates the players can dribble towards a basket and do an under- arm throw to the basket from behind the throwing line. 3.The ball and stick is then retrieved and the game re-started. Remember to grip the stick correctly after each throw. Basket Gates Throwing Line

7 Basketball About the Game: The thrill of the size 3 ball dropping through the basketball hoop is second to none in year 1 and 2 PE. Add to this the ever developing skill of tracking and controlling a bouncing ball and you have a great game to play at home or at school. Rules: 1.Every player has a ball and on the signal can dribble around the court stopping at baskets to shoot. 2.If another player is already at a particular basket players must wait behind cones before approaching basket to shoot. 3.Players cannot shoot at the same basket twice in a row. 4.Play for 1 minute and have as many goes as possible in order to beat your best score. Hoops Waiting Cones

8 Fun Relays About the Game: Enjoy classic events such as the egg and spoon relay, sack race and water relay that promote teamwork, fair-play and speed. Rules: 1.Athletes go up and around cone before handing over to the next in line. 2.6 roughly equal teams. Benches are used to quickly sort teams. One athlete per chair. It doesn’t matter if teams are unequal. 3.Run each relay for 2 minutes before changing activities. Cones Rows of 4 chairs
