Sepsis By Don Hudson, D.O.,FACEP/ACOEP

2 What is sepsis This is an infection that has spread to the blood
The patient will usually have a low B/P & be in shock It may caused by Viral, Bacterial or Fungal infections It may also be caused by the bodies own defense systems

3 Who May Get Septic The very young & the very old
People with chronic infections Cancer patients Patients with large injuries Patients on steroids Also transplant patients

4 What other infections might cause sepsis
Pneumonia Meningitis Cellulitis Urinary tract infections, Pyelonephritis Gall Bladder disease Ruptured appendix

7 Knee Puncture

8 Pneumonia

11 What Will You Do ? Two large bore IV’s Oxygen & and Monitor
Call medical control Antibiotics IV, first choice on site will be Rocephin Consider Vasopressors Discuss with medical control possibility of draining obvious abscesses

12 These are sick patients
They will need a medivac after you discuss with medical control These patients have the potential to die quickly Aggressive treatment is needed

13 What about the other infections
Most will be self limiting with good hygiene OTC creams & antibiotics Close observation at least daily Check feet especially diabetics MRSA is still an issue and will be treated off site (usually)

14 Medivac Not Available You need to discuss carefully with med control all of the options Monitor B/P, urine output as well as the rest of the V/S Examine the patient frequently Take good notes
