STATIC ELECTRICITY

Electric charge 12 p+ Atoms are neutral Same # of protons as electrons

Electric charge 12 p+ Overall charge  +2 When electrons are gained or lost, atom has an overall charge (net electric charge)

Attract or repel? Opposites Attract Like charges repel + ++ - --

Are we alike? You are made of atoms which have protons and electrons Electrons move through you easily

What holds/transfers charge? conductors Electrons easily move through conductors insulators Electrons do not easily move through insulators (BUT insulators can still become charged)

Three ways to transfer charge: friction Charge by friction induction Charge by induction contact Charge by contact

FRICTION: friction Charge by friction Law of Conservation Charge  Rubbing does not create charge, it merely transfers charge.

CONTACT Charge by contact Law of Conservation Charge  Both objects end up with the same type of charge (but now have less of it).

INDUCTION induction Charge by induction PHET animation Law of Conservation Charge  Induction separates charge in the object, but the number of protons and electrons remains the same (assuming the object was initially neutral).

More with Induction

Electricity is everywhere! No electricity
