1 Intro to Mac OS GSLIS Instructional Technology and Design

2 First things first (you’ve probably already gotten this far) Select Mac from the GSLIS OS picker Login using your GSLIS username/password Quota manager will alert you of your available disk space. Click “Thanks” Your quota is the space allotted to you on the GSLIS file server

3 Many names, the same thing Mac OS > OS X > 10.6 = Snow Leopard 10.7 = Lion 10.8 = Mountain Lion 10.5 = Leopard

4 What about Mountain Lion? 10.8—the newest iteration of OS X Does not yet cooperate with the GSLIS lab login system Introduces a few new features If you’ve recently purchased a new Mac, you probably have this on your machine

5 Why use Mac? The majority of GSLIS domain machines dual boot giving you the option to choose Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) The nature of the networking infrastructure works well with Mac, hence the better boot time

6 Basic Mouse, Pad and Keyboard Functions Ctrl (Control) in Windows = Command ( ⌘ ) Alt in Windows = Option Functions remain same – To Save, Command+S – To copy, Command+C, etc. On Apple Pad, you can right-click by: – Using two fingers and clicking simultaneously – Using control then clicking pad

7 Meet your desktop

8 The dock Functions similarly to the start menu in Windows. Keep frequently used programs here for quick access. Simply drag and drop programs to your dock to add, drag them off the dock to remove.

9 Minimized applications When you minimize a window in OS X, it shrinks into the dock. Bring it back to your desktop by clicking it again.

11 Finder Cont. On GSLIS computers, Finder gives access to your saved files – Files saved onto the Desktop while you were on the Windows side are now in Desktop > Windows_Desktop – Access your home drive files under “Places” carrot on the left Displays all related files to your NetID on GSLIS servers – Access I-Drive directly under Devices carrot, Macintosh HD > homei > users > your NetID

12 Finder Cont. Each finder window has a search within this folder option, view options and item details among other things

13 Applications Most programs are found in the Applications folder

15 Resizing windows Click and drag the corner

16 Close Minimize Maximize You can also use Command ( ⌘ ) + Q to close programs.

23 Using spotlight to tweak your dock Your default browser in OS X is Safari You can quickly switch to Firefox by launching Firefox from spotlight, right-clicking on the application icon in your dock, and opting to keep it in your dock Get rid of Safari by dragging it off your dock
