1 2 nd – 6 th Rockstars September 16-20 Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – Both 4th Grade groups have successfully reached our stamina goal time. YAY!! We are ready to start our station rotations within our Daily 5 & CAFÉ!! Our story for the week will be, Because of Winn Dixie. Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will be learning comprehension skills, strategies, vocabulary, as well as, continuing Read to Self and Someone. This week students will be able to describe the chronological order of the events that take place in a story. 5th Grade Literacy - My 5th grade groups have well surpassed their stamina goal time & independently worked in a station for over 30 minutes. Go 5th grade!!! Therefore these students are ready to begin content and station rotations. Our story for the week will be, Frindle. Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will be learning comprehension skills, strategies, vocabulary, as well as, continuing Read to Self and Someone. This week students will be able to indentify the components that create the plot of the story and how the characters contribute to the events that take place. Send in Sunny D labels with your child’s name & homeroom teacher. This is to benefit classroom libraries & our school library. Please remember to wear your tennis shoes on gym days! September 19 – Fall Picture Day September 30 – Open House 2nd Grade Math - My second graders will be working on adding numbers with and without regrouping and solving real-world problems. 3rd Grade Math - My third graders will be working on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally with and without regrouping and rounding numbers to estimate sums and differences. 2nd Grade Social Studies - This week we will be identifying the causes of the Revolutionary War and studying the Constitution. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd graders will be taking a test on the earliest Americans, and reviewing biomes and habitats. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will continue studying our United States Regions and locating Kentucky's place in the world. 2 nd Grade Literacy This week second grade will begin practice rotating the three stations that they have mastered thus far. They will be introduced to two new stations, Listen to Reading and Word Work 3 rd Grade Literacy This week third grade will begin their first official run through of the Daily 5. I can identify and analyze character, setting, and theme to aid in comprehension. I can use background knowledge to aid comprehension. 2nd Grade Science I can describe what makes up rocks. I can find out how minerals can be described. 3rd Grade Science I can describe ways in which all fish are alike. I can describe ways animals can help people. Reminders - 2nd and 3rd grade book order due Friday, September 20th.

2 Bowen 5th Grade Science Classes – Students will be studying the reproduction of plants and animals in this chapter. We will be starting plants from propagation and reviewing life cycles. 6th Grade Science Classes- Students will be studying Chapter 10 Chemistry. Be prepared for a lot of interest in this unit of study. Experiments over chemical changes will have students moving and shaking! Language classes Students will be looking at the differences in editing and revising this week. Their first writing pieces will be in the editing and revision stages. Math- This week we will continue estimation with quotients and products. We will also continue with prime and composite numbers Continue to work with your children in multiplication facts as this is essential to what we are working on in class. Science- We will finish up ecosystems this week. We have had an exciting first lab experiment with dissecting an owl pellet to learn about the food chain. Talk with your child about their experience, they have really enjoyed this activity and have lots of new information to share :) Writing We are on our last week of Real Narrative Writing. We will begin to Revise/Edit our work. Literacy Daily 5 is in full swing. We are becoming voracious readers. Rock On! Linder Fifth grade math classes will continue this week with Chapter 2. We will work on dividing using patterns, and simplifying numeric expressions using the order of operations. Drops in the Bucket 6 will be due on Friday. Please remind your child to use homework help throughout the week, so they are prepared. I encourage you to look over the Drops with your child weekly since it has everyday math skills that students need to practice. In fifth grade students will begin exploration of the New World in Chapter 5. Students will learn how European explorers claimed land in North America. In sixth grade, students will continue a study of Latin America as they explore the land, history, and the ancient civilizations. They will also examine the government, and struggles of Mexico today. What great discoveries we are having in math this year. Please take the time to check out my website. There are many links to videos and documents that will help you and your child with the math concepts that we are working with in class. We will also begin working with Edmodo. This is a program that allows me to communicate with the students through the internet. This will be a great way for some students to get in some independent learning. Keep Rockin' math students!!!!!!
