As we start our fourth week with this new program we will increase our stamina expectations of Read to Self for 20 minutes. I will also be introducing the station, Work on Writing, where we will create an “I Can” chart of the behavior we would see while students are writing on a particular topic. Students will model the correct and incorrect ways to independently learn within this station. Come & join us!!! Make sure you wear or bring tennis shoes on days you have P.E. No School – Monday, September 2 nd Grandparent’s Day Celebration Friday, September 13 th Book Fair September 6 th – 13 th 2nd Grade Math - This week we will complete our unit on reading, writing, comparing, ordering numbers to 1,000, and identifying number patterns. We will also begin to add numbers with and without regrouping and solve real-world addition problems. Mrs. Carla Wood will be joining our second grade team. She and I will be regrouping our second grade math students so that we can have two smaller groups instead of one large group. We are so excited! 3rd Grade Math - My third grade math students will be working on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally with and without regrouping and rounding numbers to estimate sums and differences. 2nd Grade Social Studies - We are going to have a wonderful time this week constructing a compass rose and locating and labeling cardinal and ordinal directions. We will also use cardinal and ordinal directions to locate places on a map. 3rd Grade Social Studies - Our third grade students will continue to have a ball learning about the Earliest Americans. 4th Grade Social Studies - For the next couple of weeks we will be studying about the regions of the United States and learning about latitude and longitude. We will also continue to review Geography terms. 2nd and 3rd Grade Literacy This week we will be working on developing our stamina for our third new station in the Daily Five, Read to Someone. Read to Someone allows the students the opportunity to listen to others read and ask questions about the text being read. 2nd Grade Science (The Earth's Surface) I can discover what makes up rocks. I can explain what soil is made of. 3rd Grade Science (Invertebrates) I can explain the defenses used by invertebrates (ants, bees, butterflies). I can recognize predators of invertebrates (ants, bees, butterflies).

2 Bowen 5th Grade Science Classes - 5th graders are enjoying the various experiments we have conducted to learn about plants. 6th Grade Science Classes- 6th graders are starting their DARE classes! We appreciate Deputy Ken Thomas coming in each week to teach us about drug abuse resistance education. Language classes are preparing to write narratives! We are so excited to put our writing traits to use! Math- We have finished up our unit on place value and started Estimation and Number Theory. We will continue this week with Estimation. I have been assigning Drops in a Bucket weekly and will be due every Friday. Science- We have been studying the life cycles of chickens and frogs in the classroom. Our chickens will hatch in two more weeks! Our tadpoles continue to change daily and we have one full grown frog. We will be studying food chains and ecosystems for the next two weeks. Writer's Workshop - We are working hard on our Realistic Narrative piece. Please encourage your child at home and ask them questions about their writing. That will help them think more about what they write. Daily Five/CAFÉ - We will begin our fourth station this week: Word Work. We are almost at full-steam ahead in our literacy class. Feel free to stop by and see how our reading works. Rock On! Linder Fifth grade will continue to work in small groups to learn about and compare the Native Americans cultural regions of North America. Students will test on Friday. Please encourage your child to use the online tutorial and their interactive notes to study for the Social Studies tests. Sixth grade is finishing up "Think like a Geographer" presentations. They will study our neighbor to the north; Canada. Fifth grade Math students are continuing to multiply whole numbers using patterns. Don't forget next week is a short week, no school on Monday, so only four days to work on Drops in the bucket #4. Encourage use of time in class and homework time to finish assignments. We will be working on squared and cubed numbers this week. I may also challenge the students with larger powers and absolute value. I'm positive that they can do it. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions that you may have about Math. I'll be glad to help. Chapter 1 test next week. (Yes, we are postponing it a bit..)
