1 ‘Know the risks and hazards associated with sports participation’ P4, M3, D1

2 Criteria A description of six risks and hazards associated with taking part in sport in schools. These should cover a range of activities and should be linked to personal preparation, equipment and the environment. P4 These risks and hazards should be further explained by using examples from experiences of sport in schools or professional sport. M3 Give a detailed account on a separate sheet of paper of why participants are at risk of injury whilst taking part in sport. D1

3 Prevention is better than treatment. Here are some ways that you can avoid sports injuries.

4 Hazard Something that has the potential to cause harm

5 Risk The chance that someone will be harmed by the hazard.

6 Playing Surface Broken glass on pitches, wet patches on floors and even rakes left in long jump pits can all cause accidents and injuries.

7 Skill Level Play with the right age group. Play with a team or to a level that matches your ability. Eg. If a young novice boxer played an adult professional, it would mean certain injury. Competition must be fair.

8 Weather Take note of the weather. WEATHER – Most games can be played outside in all kinds of weather although ice & water can cause dangerous slippery conditions which are not safe. Weather conditions should also be taken into consideration. As a lack of visibility can cause accidents. What if it is too hot?

9 Inappropriate warm-up and cool-down Warm up Injuries such as strained and pulled muscles can be avoided by warming up correctly. Cool down A correct cool down helps prevent stiffness and soreness increasing recovery time. This makes you better prepared for the next event. 10 Technique Techniques & Skills – Our skill level needs to be high enough so that we can perform them well. Good levels of performance help us avoid injury. A bad technique in any sport can lead to an injury. Eg…???

11 Clothing If the sport that you play requires protective gear, for example a mouth guard, shin pads or helmet wear them! No Jewellery - This can cause injury to the individual & others.
