T HE S CIENTIFIC M ETHOD T HE H INDENBURG Title: The Mystery That Surrounds the Hindenberg. Hindenberg Footage

Question or Purpose: What will happen to the balloon filled with Hydrogen?

Hypothesis: If I put fire to a balloon filled with hydrogen, then it will go through a chemical reaction and explode.

I NDEPENDENT V ARIABLE W HAT I C ONTROL The independent variable is adding heat to the balloon filled with hydrogen.

D EPENDENT V ARIABLE T HE DEPENDENT VARIABLE IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER I DO SOMETHING The dependent variable is that a chemical reaction takes place and the hydrogen explodes.

P ROCEDURE : S TEP BY S TEP P ROCESS OF THE LAB 1. Put on your ___safety goggles. 2. Fill a 250mL flask with 60ml of hot water. 3. Count out 15 pellets of NaOH and drop them into the flask.

4. Crumple three 5cm squares of aluminum foil into loose balls and drop them into the flask. 5. Stretch the open end of a balloon over the flask to capture the gas that is produced.

6. Record your observations in the first column of the data table. 7. While the balloon is filling with hydrogen gas read the article and create a summary paragraph of the article using the IVF format.

8. After the balloon has filled, remove the balloon from the flask and tie off the end. **Be careful not to allow the gas to escape!!

9. Clear all items, including lab equipment, from your lab table and tape the hydrogen balloon to the center of the table.

10. Tape a wooden match to the end of a meter stick and light the match using another match.

11. Touch the match to the bottom of the balloon, NOT next to where you tied it.

12. Fill in the second column of your data table. 13. Clean-up and prepare tray for next class period.

D ATA : B ALLOON REACTION QUALITATIVE OBSERVATIONS What is happening to the balloon while it is on the bottle? What is happening to the aluminum foil? Is a chemical reaction taking place? What happens to the balloon when fire is put to the bottom of it? Does a chemical reaction take place?

O BSERVATIONS : There was a chemical reaction between NaOH, water, and the aluminum foil (Al). The aluminum foil began to react and change color. The chemical reaction produced a gas which filled the balloon. Gas being given off is a sign of a chemical reaction. The gas that filled the balloon was hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is very flammable. Because of this, when a heat source was applied, the gas in the balloon caught fire.

C ONCLUSION : If I put heat to a balloon filled with hydrogen, then it will go through a chemical reaction and explode. I proved my hypothesis.
