INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL REACTIONS Aim: To find out the different signs of a chemical reaction. Task: 1.Organize notebook page. 2. Make a quick sketch of the set-up. Indicate materials. 3.Record observations for each activity (8 demos). 4.Write a summary that lists or indicates a chemical reaction.

DEMO ACTIVITIES 1.Blue Bottle 2.Foam Column 3.Burning Magnesium 4.Burning steel wool 5.Solid Reaction 6.Endothermic Reaction (outside) 7.Carbon Pillar (outside) 8.Ethanol Flare

Evidence of chemical reactions Name DiagramMaterials Observations 1 2 3 4 5 Part A - Observations

Evidence of chemical reactions Name DiagramMaterials Observations 6 7 8 Part B - Indications of chemical reaction Make a list of all the observations from above that indicate that a chemical reaction has taken place.

1. Blue Bottle Measure 5g Dextrose Measure 5g NaOH pellets Add to 250ml water Place ¼ drop 1% methylene blue Conical flask Stopper Shake the flask until NaOH is dissolved Wait 2. Foam Column Potassium Permanganate (flat spoonful) Squirt of detergent - enough to cover the KMnO4 30-50ml of hydrogen peroxide (slowly add) 3.Burning Magnesium 2cm of Mg Hold in tongs Ignite 4.Burning steel wool Bunsen burner mounted horizontally Ball of wool Then spread the wool out

5.Solid Reaction 1 test tube containing Potassium Iodide 1 test tube containing Lead Nitrate Pour the KI into a conical flask Carefully lower the test tube of PbNO3 into the flask Place on stopper Place on balance and zero Tilt flask to spill the PbNO3 6.Endothermic Reaction 10g Barium Hydroxide 10g Ammonium Nitrate Mix two in a 80ml beaker Stir with glass rod - be careful of the fumes Measure temperature 7.Carbon Pillar 40ml white sugar H 2 SO4 Small beaker (80ml) Enough of the H2SO4 to cover the sugar 8.Ethanol Flare Splash of Ethanol into the bottom of a 5 gallon water container Swill to fill container with Ethanol vapour Ignite at arms length

SUMMARY From the 8 demos, the following are signs of a chemical reaction: These signs are seen in the …. (cite examples from the demos)

Assessment ItemAssessment CriteriaPoints Student Evaluation Instructor Evaluation Performance Accurately recorded observations for all (8) activities 4 Labeled diagrams and list of materials clearly illustrates set-up for the labs 4 Summary conclusion accurately describes signs of a chemical reaction 2 TOTAL (out of) 10
