3 Statistics School helps teach innovation in pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, grounded in an idea that aims to make school relevant and engaging for young students. (Bahr and Pendergast, 2007, p.204) Studies show that students who plan on enrolling into tertiary study were more engaged than those who planned to leave school and go to work. (NSW DET, 2006, p. 212 - 213) New South Wales middle years consist of years 5 – 6 and 7 – 8, the transition between primary and high school. There has been a revised syllabus for years 7 – 10 and there is now statewide testing for both literacy and numeracy (Bahr and Pendergast, 2007, p. 211)

5 Microsystem Closest to the child and contains structures that the child has direct contact with. At this level relationships can have impact in two directions – both away from the child and towards the child. My Avatar: Family Schools Child care Community and Church

7 Exosystem This layer defines the larger system in which the child does not function directly with. The structures in the layer impact on the child’s development by interacting with some structures in the inner layer – Microsytem My Avatar: To set him up for the future Good school (Public Education)

8 Macrosystem This layer is considered the outmost layer in the child’s environment. While not being a specific framework this layer is comprised of laws and values that have a cascading influence throughout the interactions of all other layers. My Avatar: His future chosen career University or TAFE

9 Chronosystem Changes in the child’s environment which produce new conditions that affect development. This system encompasses the dimension of time as it relates to the child’s environment. My Avatar: World economic prices School fees Fuel for the car
