4 Why do college students cheat? What could be done to reduce the incidence of cheating and plagiarism? Have you ever cheated?

5 Interviewee #1 A – The availability of time is a huge issue. Also, laziness plays a big part. B- I know that some instructors have ways of catching plagiarism but aside from that, I have no clue. C - Yes Interviewee #2 A - It’s easy, you’ll get a better grade and you feel inadequate (i.e. you can’t make the grade) B- ? C - Yes

6 Interviewee #1 A - To get a good grade. Lazy so turn to cheating. B - So much! Policies C – Don’t agree. Conscience Interviewee #2 A – Work easier More Free Time B - More in-class time C – Depends on assignment

B - Ask more question to get the correct information that will be on up coming tests. C - Yes she has cheated

9 Interviewee #1 A – Make or break grade (Final), lazy, too busy, the thrill, lack of confidence, don’t study. B – less weighted grades, more time (work/ask questions), Warnings and repercussions. C - Yes Interviewee #2 A – getting ahead, don’t study, lazy, thrill, the class really doesn’t matter. B – Sit people farther away from each other, each test is different, teachers always checking. C - Yes

11 Avoid putting students in high-pressure situations Prepare students well for tests, projects and assignments Focus on the learning and not grades Tell students what concepts will be on the test Have available extra help Be clear about cheating and plagiarism policies and enforce them consistently Monitor carefully during tests Encourage collaboration on assignments and experiment with open-book, collaborative, or take- home tests
