Chapter 8 Tools and Equipment

Introduction This chapter covers the following topics : Handling hand and power tools Storing hand and power tools Using hand and power tools Using test equipment Safety issues

Handling Hand and Power Tools Hand tools –Manually powered tools Precautions for using hand tools –Use the proper type and size tool for the job –Carry tools with the cutting edge down –Keep hands clean when using tools –Clamp small pieces when using a hacksaw, screwdriver, or soldering iron

Handling Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Precautions for using hand tools (cont’d.) : Avoid using chisels and punches with mushroomed heads Never use a file without a handle Never use plastic-handled tools near an open flame Keep metal tools clear of electrical circuits –Cut only one wire at a time

Handling Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Power tools –Tools powered by electricity Precautions for using power tools –Ensure power tools have grounded three- prong plugs or a UL-approved housing –Make all adjustments to the machine before turning it on

Handling Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Precautions for using power tools (cont) : Double-check any special set-ups prior to applying power Keep safety guards in proper position Clean the work area clean Keep power tools clean and put away when not in use

Handling Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Precautions for using power tools (cont) : Avoid treating power tools roughly Keep all power tools in good condition with regular maintenance Keep power tools in a safe place

Storing Hand and Power Tools Toolbox –Used to organize hand tools Keep tools used most often near the top of the toolbox Organizing power tools –May be kept in bins in a storage cabinet –Do not wrap cord around tool

Using Hand and Power Tools Hand tools are necessary for building electronic circuits –Use the correct tool for the job Insulated tools are used for working on live circuits –Used when power cannot be shut down –Inspect frequently to insure insulation is intact

Using Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Power tool classifications –Commercial and consumer –Portable and stationary Protect eyes, lungs, and extremities when using power tools –Use protective clothing and equipment

Figure 8-6 When using power tools, always wear protective gear. Leather gloves may be substituted for rubber or vinyl gloves. © 2014 Cengage Learning.

Using Hand and Power Tools (cont’d.) Never plug a three-prong cord into a two- prong receptacle Ensure safety guards are in place Never use a power tool for other than its intended use

Using Test Equipment Electronic test equipment : Used to generate signals and capture circuit responses Can be used to prove circuit is working properly Some types of test equipment can be simulated in a virtual environment

Using Test Equipment (cont’d.) Examples of test equipment Voltmeter Ammeter Frequency counter Wattmeter Logic probes Multimeter Ohmmeter

Safety Issues Common hand tool hazards –Caused by misuse and improper maintenance Specially designed tools may be required for hazardous environments Personal protective equipment –Depends on the nature of the task –Eye protection must always be worn

Safety Issues (cont’d.) Do not wear loose clothing or dangling objects Never adjust a tool when it is running Disconnect tools before changing accessories –And when not in use

Safety Issues (cont’d.) Safety guidelines for working on electric circuits : Secure the power source : Do not wear loose or flapping clothing Work only in clean, dry areas Wear only nonconductive shoes Remove metal jewelry
