Climate-Energy-Jobs How do we reap the huge potential in energy wasting buildings? Kim Carstensen Leader, WWF’s Global Climate Initiative Jens Laustsen Senior energy policy analyst (buildings), the International Energy Agency (IEA) Eelco van Heel Board member, European Insulation Manufacturers’ Association (EURIMA) CEO, the Rockwool Group

ClimateEnergyJobs More energy efficient buildings can...reduce CO 2 emissions considerably...reduce dependency on fossil fuels...create thousands of jobs

3 More energy efficient buildings are needed – both in hot and cold climates Poorly insulated buildings inflate the need for heating when cold – and cooling when hot In 2030, 70% of the world’s population (6 billion) will live in urban areas In 2030, CO 2 emissions from buildings up 50%, due to a.o. increased use of air conditioning in the East and the US

33% of all energy in EU is used for transport 26% of all energy in EU is used by industry 41% of all energy in EU is used in buildings 2/3 of energy consumption in buildings is used for heating, cooling and ventilation Buildings are the biggest energy consumer and a major CO 2 polluter

Newbuild How to improve energy efficiency in buildings Renovation

Newbuild: How low can we go? It is easy with existing and proven technology to build houses that use 80% less energy than today’s average house! Sources: EU Commission, DK building regulations and www.passivhaus.de kWh/m2/year for heating

Renovation: Energy modernisation Potential in the EU alone: 460 Mt CO 2 per year = Italy’s annual emmissions €270 billion in energy costs 500,000 jobs New legislation (EPBD2) tightens energy requirements Sources: Ecofys, EURIMA

Barriers: Low priority Lack of knowledge Funding Low quality of craftsmen and contractors’ work Owner/tenant dilemma But... market forces need help

Construction workers Architects Engineers Building materials industry Substantial energy modernisation will create jobs

Strengthen energy requirements considerably Make very-low energy homes the standard choice (passive house levels mandatory in new UK buildings from 2013) Stimulus packages targeted at energy renovations Always make building renovations energy efficient Make public buildings energy efficient role models Political leadership needed

The fight against climate change starts at home... Thank you! Eelco van Heel, Board member, European Insulation Manufacturers’ Association (EURIMA) CEO, Rockwool International A/S
