Explore the process of self-organizing Recognize self-organizing processes in the history and future of HSD Institute Investigate how simple rules shape the emerging patterns of HSD and HSD Institute Explore resources to support your continuing learning and development

Short List of Simple Rules Every agent in the system applies the same set of rules to shape behavior: Encourage coherent patterns without over constraining individual agents Ensure local adaptation and emergence of system-wide pattern Allow for adaptation to changing environments

12 12 © 2008. HSD Institute. Use with permission. Short List of Simple Rules Rules for simple rules: Small number—between 3 and 7 Begin with a verb Work for everyone and every place in the system Need at least one rule for each feature of pattern: What makes us the same? What makes a difference to us? How do we work with each other?

13 13 © 2008. HSD Institute. Use with permission. These are not values–they tell you what to DO, not what to think or feel These are not group norms– they hold over space and time Sometimes the rules contradict each other (this isn’t bad, it just means the group will live with ambiguity) The “rules” depend on individual freedom to interpret and apply in unique situations Else?
