Global Positioning System Introduction

What is GPS? A satellite-based radio- navigation system comprised of a constellation of twenty-four satellites and their supporting ground stations, used to obtain precise positions of targets on, or near, the surface of the Earth.

How do I use it? Main way to learn how to use it, is to go out and play around. Take a minute to familiarize yourself with your GPS, everyone is different.

Waypoints, Routes, Path, Find Waypoints-mark certain spots of interest. Routes-you can mark points along a path or put in a predetermined route to follow. Tracks-Have the GPS follow your path. Find-have direction to previous marked spot.

Latitude, Longitude and UTM? We will be using Lat, and Long. Forest service, FWP and other government agencies will use UTM which is Universal Transverse Mercator. If you wish to switch you go into setup and change your units to UTM. The newer Topographic maps have UTM on them as well.

Latitude and Longitude UTM

What could I use it for? Education –Science-marking transects, areas of restoration, survey points. –P.E.- Geocaching Hunting Fishing Hiking Cars boats Certain jobs-firefighting, search and rescue

Pro’s and Con’s Pro’s –Easy to use once familiar –Many tasks with one device –Light weight and compact –Can be a life saver Con’s –Some you have to be moving to work –Can’t be indoors –People become to reliant on electronic device –Batteries –Some don’t show terrain

Today’s Assignment Mark 4 points –Just outside my building door. –The light post in the parking lot. –The cross walk to the football field. –The stadium. Go back to the class and then the library: –Bring up Google earth –Put 4 points into program with description of area.

Conclusion There is a ton of stuff you can do with these devices so go run with what I’ve shown you. We could also spend a class just on how to run them. Downloads on internet. If you buy one, don’t get the cheapest. THANKS AND HAVE A GOOD SCHOOL YEAR! IF YOU NEED ANY HELP DURING THE YEAR DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK.
