2 Dietary Guidelines:  A set of guidelines set by the government to help direct Americans toward a healthy weight.

4 Fiber:  Age + 5= (up to 27 grams)  Examples of fibrous foods:

5 Healthy Snacks:  Choose snacks LOW in salt, fat, and sugar.

6 Quiz: answer the following on a sheet of paper: NO NOTES  What are the daily recommended amounts for:  Sugar  Sodium  calcium  Nutrition is the study of:  What food source on the hunger cycle supplies the most energy for the longest period of time?  Using the information learned from the hunger cycle, explain in a paragraph why Gatorade is not a good drink for athletes?

7 Snacks:  Choose fresh fruits and veggies.

8 Snacks:  Choose food high in calcium and fiber.

9 Snacks:  Avoid processed foods.

10 Can Fish Play Volleyball  Include the following in your breakfast:  Calcium  Fruit  Protein  Veggies

11 Breakfast:  To break your fast  25% of your daily caloric intake

12 Sodium:  Less than 2400 milligrams a day! This includes salt added while cooking food.  Higher Sodium Sources:  Processed Luncheon meats, Sausage, Hot dogs, Canned & frozen entrees, Saltine crackers, Snack/specialty Crackers, Processed cheeses

13 Calcium:  1300 milligrams a day.  Equal to 3 glasses of milk.  Phosphoric acid

15 Build a Healthy Base:  Let the pyramid guide your choices.  Choose a variety of grain products daily, especially whole grains.  Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.  Keep food safe to eat.

16 Choose Sensibly:  Choose a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in the total fat.  Choose beverages and foods to limit your intake of sugar.  Choose and prepare foods with less salt.
