Chapter Governance Nick Caputo Theta-Delta Chapter

How is Sigma Pi structured? –Grand Chapter –Provinces Chapters Colonies Interest Groups Alumni Clubs

This is the standard layout of a Sigma Pi Chapter. Some chapters may differ towards the middle, but most are set-up following this model.

Sigma Pi Fraternity Grand Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity establishes rules for chapters –Grand Chapter is governed by the Grand Council, which Chris Brown will talk about The Executive Office helps chapters follow those rules –This is always good for chapters; it helps them operate more efficiently as an organization

College or University “Host institutions” generally have a set of rules for campus organizations –The scope and depth of these rules change on each campus –Some schools are over-legislated to death and others are given too much freedom –A well-run fraternity will thrive, regardless of its surroundings

Chapter Director Sigma Pi Fraternity prescribes that each chapter should have a Chapter Director The role of the Chapter Director –Be the representative of the Grand Sage –Give the undergraduates any necessary tools or advice to efficiently run the chapter –Act as a liaison between alumni and actives –Serve on Alumni Boards, Clubs, or Associations –Assist the undergraduates in fully understanding Sigma Pi Fraternity and what it means to be a brother –BEHIND EVERY GREAT CHAPTER IS A GREAT CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Faculty Advisor Colleges generally require a Faculty Advisor for their campus organizations In the case of Sigma Pi, a Faculty Advisor can be a Chapter Director if the situation allows Job Description varies from place to place, but this is generally the person who is responsible to university officials if the chapter gets in trouble Also a good resource for brothers re: Academics

“The Chapter” Chapters are composed of undergraduate, active members of the fraternity and new members (pledges) who attend the school They represent Sigma Pi on campus, in the community, to the Grand Chapter and Council, and the Executive Office Chapters are the lifeblood of Sigma Pi

Executive Council These men are given the job of operating (and representing) the chapter in good times and bad Any failure on the Executive Council can lead to an internal domino effect –Impacts every facet of the chapter from recruitment to social functions to pledging –Every significant decision imaginable is made by the Executive Council –Put the right men in the right positions and you won’t have to worry about this

Chairmen These brothers are either appointed or elected to their positions Chairmen lead committees –In some smaller chapters, the committee system cannot function properly, so the Chairmen do the jobs themselves –A worthwhile committee head is able to delegate, no matter the size of his chapter They plan, operate, and create events If the Executive Council are the eyes and ears of a chapter, then Committee Heads are the arms and legs.

Committees Standing Committees: ACE Project Brotherhood Community Service/Philanthropy Fundraising Intramurals/Sports New Member Education Scholarship Social Recruitment/Rush Ad Hoc Committees: –Public Relations –Sorority Relations –Homecoming –Special Activities (Brotherhood Trips) –Alumni (when 1st Counselor is inefficient) –Orchid Ball/Spring Formal –Others as Needed

Brothers This “category” pretty much encompasses everyone else These are the guys who serve on committees, help out at chapter events, rush prospective new members at social functions, etc. –When you’re initiated, if you wind up in this category, it’s not a free-ride to do nothing! Everyone is obligated to cooperate for the good of the Fraternity. –If you want to hold a position in the future, then contributing as soon as you’re initiated is the best way to show your worthiness. –If you are in a leadership position in your chapter and you see that there are brothers who are doing nothing, then consult your Chapter Director and Province Archon

Pledges You guys – you have the task to learn about Sigma Pi in preparation for your time as an active brother in the chapter Each chapter will prepare you differently, but the goal remains the same: to teach you how to follow the 10 Obligations of a Pledge and Member of Sigma Pi Fraternity –Not that hard –Hit the ground running once you are initiated, and don’t look back.

If you see a break in this scheme or a failed step in this scheme, the whole thing can crumble Get assistance from the Executive Office, Province Archon, and Chapter Director Play your part and the chapter should operate smoothly
