1 Starlings Term 2: Autumn 2012 The rotten Romans Physical Development We will be focusing our learning in these areas: Games – we will be developing skills in finding and using space and using tactics when playing small-sided games. Gymnastics –We will be developing our skills of poise and balance We will also begin to develop our swimming skills Knowledge & Understanding of the World We will be studying the Romans, including The changes that the Romans brought to Britain including road building, aqueducts temples and baths. Roman beliefs and gods. Investigating how the Romans entertained themselves. Emperor Hadrian and Hadrian’s wall. Roman cooking activities and toga party. Trip to the Roman legion museum in Wales. Our science this term is a study of Light, including: Investigating sources of light and how we see. Designing experiments to test materials that are reflective, opaque, transparent and translucent. Investigating how shadows are made. Developing our prediction skills. Developing our ability to use the evidence we have collected to spot patterns and make conclusions In ICT, we will be developing our control skills using the computer programme logo. We will also be looking at aspects of e-safety and investigating a Roman adventure game In Design and technology we will be designing and making our own pizzas Communication, Literacy and Language We will be focusing on the following learning: investigating and creating our own information texts about the Ancient Romans, including developing note taking skills and presentation techniques. Exploring stories with historical settings: Romulus and Remus. Reading and performing Christmas poetry. Spelling investigations Whole class and group reading activities French: numbers, and classroom instructions Creative Development In Art we will be developing our 3d clay skills by designing and creating our own night light holders We will also be creating our own Roman mosaics and Roman shields Connected to our Science theme of light we will be creating stained glass window designs and using light paper to create shadow pictures The children will continue to develop their music skills with our specialist music teacher Mrs Winning- Hart PSE Development (Personal and Social Emotional) SEAL unit – Getting on and falling out What qualities make a good friend? What triggers anger and how can we diffuse it? Anti-bullying week: What is bullying and how do I deal with it? In RE we will be exploring the deeper meanings of religious festivals including Hanukah, Christmas and the Roman festival of Saturnalia Learning Developing lifelong learning skills is central to all that we do. This term we will be focusing on: Continuing to increase our ability to focus on tasks for longer periods of time and manage distractions Developing skills of empathy and reflection Mathematical development We will be focusing on the following learning: Revising our skills of doubling and halving. Consolidating our addition and subtraction mental maths skills and developing our knowledge of multiplication tables. Investigating the properties of 2d and 3d shapes including angle and symmetry. Developing increased accuracy with measuring skills including length, area and perimeter. Developing our addition and subtraction skills of large numbers using a range of written strategies. Problem solving
