1 MOUNT PLEASANT PRIMARY SCHOOL Y3 Summer 2, 2015 MATHS In This term in Maths, Year 3 will be continuing to work on mental and written methods for adding and subtracting numbers with up to 3 digits, and applying these skills to solve problems. They will learn to read, write, order and round two- and three-digit numbers, and use multiplication and division to solve problems. In work on shape children will learn to identify horizontal, vertical and curved lines, and to identify different angles. They will also learn to measure using millilitres and litres. Children will also be learning fractions of shapes and amounts, understanding data and reading time on analogue and digital clocks. This will include solving problems that involve time intervals. This term’s science topic is light. Children will discuss where light comes from and carry out experiments to discover how shadows are formed and affected. They will learn key terms such as ‘transparent’, ‘translucent’ and ‘opaque’. They will also discuss how different materials reflect light, and how this can help children choose appropriate reflective clothing for travelling safely in the dark. Children can visit the bbc bitesize site to support learning. ENGLISH English this half term we are looking at the book Diary of a Killer Cat. Children will be encouraged to read the text to infer about characters and write a character description. They will also be retelling the story to familiarise themselves with text and then transferring this knowledge to write their own story following the structure of this one. Also we will be looking at play scripts recognising features and children will write this book using the features of a play script. Eventually they will act it our using the puppets they make in DT. Children will continue to work on their writing targets focusing on grammar; including punctuation and sentence construction. Children will look at how technologies such as film, television and the internet have developed during the last century. They will be encouraged to consider whether technological development is always a good thing, for example by debating ‘are there too many TV channels these days?’ P.O.R Book Summer 2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION In indoor PE the children will be doing mini athletic activities. This enables them to use the skills of agility, coordination, balance, through running, jumping and throwing. Outdoor PE is learning the skills of tennis which involves serving the ball and using a racket to hit the ball over a net. D/T DT this half term involves children designing and making a moving puppet. They will be learning how a simple pneumatic system can be used to make a part of a puppet move. Their puppet will be a shadow puppet of a character from the power of reading book to link with Science and English. MUSIC All children in Year 3 will be learning to play violins. This will involve learning to hold and try different techniques to support understanding in listening attentively to patterns and stories in music. In addition to this children will learn to sing from memory, begin to tell stories by listening to music and explore feelings through different percussions and videos planned. Computing Children will be using the coding program SCRATCH to learn the skills of writing instructions to get the computer to perform operations. The can access this at home by typing in scratch in the goggle search engine. Homework Children will continue to receive English and spelling homework in their homework books, and maths homework in their separate maths workbook. Remember that both books are due in on Wednesday at the latest. If children are struggling with the homework, they should bring it to school on Monday and go to the lunchtime homework club where a teacher will help them. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RE this half term is How and why people become a Muslim. This includes looking at what a Muslim is and their religious practises. MFL Children will be learning French for parts of the body. They will also continue to revisit precious learning.
