In the modern world of global communications and technology, societies are much more interconnected than in the past.

We believe that every human being has equal worth no matter where they live in the world and living in an interconnected world helps us to remember this. We believe that each of us has a responsibility to be a good neighbour – to love others as we love ourselves. We believe this is a good thing because…

One of the biggest movements of people in modern times is underway. Syrian people are fleeing their war torn country in fear of their lives.

Since the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, more than 4 million Syrian people have fled their country. Half of these are children.

Most have ended up in tent cities, known as Refugee Camps, in the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. These countries are struggling to cope with so many extra people.

The United Nations has asked world leaders to help resettle Syria’s displaced people to relieve the burden on its neighbours, and to give the refugees a better chance in life.

Meanwhile some Syrian refugees are choosing to make perilous journeys across the Mediterranean sea in small, rickety and overcrowded boats to find a better chance of life in Europe. Others risk their lives hiding under lorries to cross the channel to the UK.

What do you think the following words mean?  Refugee  Migrant  Global Citizens  Globalisation

Refugee A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Migrant A person who moves from one place to another in order to find work or better living conditions.

Global Citizens Global citizens are people who see themselves and others as, first and foremost, human – equal to others in their humanity. Globalisation Globalisation is the process by which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange.
