2 How do you envision learning? Are you engaged? Are your students engaged? Our purpose is found in what “spins off” …..what transfers from the classroom to The home The workplace The community Future learning experiences

3 Course outcomes begin with one question….. What do our students need to be able to DO “out there”…..in their rest of life experiences…that we are responsible for in the classroom? In outcomes based learning….this question guides course design. Work Home Community

4 Outcomes Based Learning Content no longer comes first Outcomes justify the content Focus on what students need to understand…and what skills they need to master Process skills are those things the student needs to master in order to achieve the outcomes

5 Process Skills Are used across every discipline…. Need to show up in every program and course PROCESS SKILLS –Apply communication skills to gain assistance with goal specific planning –Develop and utilize basic educational skills –Participate in service activities that promote commitment to lifelong learning and personal engagement –Complete a variety of self assessment techniques to support personal engagement –Identify priorities, barriers and time management opportunities through journaling –Identify opportunities for education in diversity

6 Four Questions for Outcomes Assessment 1.What are the intended outcomes? 2.What are the concepts and issues students must understand? 3.What are the process skills they must develop? 4.How do we ask our students to show evidence of the outcomes—collectively or individually?

7 OUTCOMESASSESSMENTS Participate in social, group, individual and facilitated activities through the lifespan Goal development Portfolio Academic Advisory Session Communicate effectively with peers, educational professionals, and family members the importance of educational preparation and career planning Goal development Portfolio Academic Advisory Session Monitor personal expectations by applying concepts of personal engagement to daily decision making Goal development, Journaling Assessment and Goal Documentation Academic Advisory Session Understand how supplemental activities and diversity training learning and success in education, community and professional settings Portfolio Academic Advisory Session Journaling Developing and utilizing basic educational skills such as Writing, Reading, Research, Communication Goal development, Journaling Assessment and Goal Documentation Portfolio Academic Advisory Session

8 So how do we design a course? Rather than focus on the content we want to cover…… We let that content emerge from a vision of what students need to be able to do beyond our classroom.

9 Course Outcomes Activity Divide into 5 teams as assigned Each team receives ONE learning outcome Teams will brainstorm ideas for getting our students to the intended outcomes Utilize note cards to map Learning Outcome Activity Theme

10 How do we get them there? Participate in social, group, individual and facilitated activities through the lifespan Portfolio of Activities Volunteerism Involvement in Student Government, PTK, etc. Service Learning Goal Development Activities Teambuilding Activities Course Themes: My.Ozarka Ozarka Online Calendars Forms Listing Financial Aid Degree Audits Transfer Student Services Goal Development Library Tour Financial Aid College Catalog How to be a College Student Academic Advising Know Yourself Exploring Careers Time Mgmt.
