2 Still Life: Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects that are either human-made or "natural.“ Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. 4 Use Levels (your eye should move around the photo like steps)

5  Use a simple background Find a position that provides a plain, non- competing background. Or place a black or pleasingly colored cardboard behind the subject.background

6  Get close If your camera has a close-up focusing mode, use it and get as close as the camera manual suggests. With a digital camera, use the display screen to compose the picture.

7  Use creative lighting Observe the lighting on your objects. -direct lighting -diffused lighting -back lighting

12 Edward Weston

13  Edward Henry Weston was born in Highland Park, Illinois on March 24, 1886. In 1902, he received his first camera for his 16th birthday, a Kodak Bull's-Eye #2, and began taking photographs in Chicago parks and at his aunt's farm. Weston met with quick success and the Chicago Art Institute exhibited his photographs a year later, in 1903. He attended the Illinois College of Photography. 15  Weston became successful working in soft-focus, pictorial style; winning many salons and professional awards.  Articles about his work were published in magazines such as American Photography, Photo Era and Photo Miniature. Weston also authored many articles himself for many of these publications.

18  His comprehensive legacy includes the detailed and articulate Daybooks he kept regularly from the mid- 1920s to 1934, which allow a very intimate glimpse into his personal life, his views on photography, and his working methods.  Weston is generally recognized as one of the greatest photographic artists of the 20th century.
