Emmett West Hour 5 12-1-11

 Observation Research Question Hypothesis Collecting Variables: IV, DV and CV Procedure Analyze Data Conclusion

 Observation: ◦ Anything that you notice with your five senses. Ex:  The room is quiet.  The floor is blue.  The football field is dirty.

 Research Question: A testable question, that can be tested and confirmed by a lab. There are bad and good research questions. Good Research questions: 1.Does a flower grow better inside or outside? 2. Who is the fastest in the room? Bad Research Questions: 1.Is blue better than Red? 2.Is she able to sing? Generally bad research questions are either a yes or no, or a one word answer.

 Hypothesis: An educated guess that is in the format of: If IV then, DV. ◦ An example of one is:  If The M&M is put in the soda, then it will dissolve faster than in the water.

 IV(Independent Variable): The thing that is controlled in an experiment.  DV(Dependent Variable): The thing that is measuring the IV or the data.  CV(Control Variable): The thing that does not change and remains constant throughout the experiment. If the Research Question is: Can an M&M dissolve faster in water or Soda? Then…. ◦ IV: The type of liquid the M&M dissolves in.  That is because you’re the one controlling the type of liquid. ◦ DV: The amount of time the M&M dissolves.  Reason being that the time is the measurement. ◦ CV: The color of the M&M.  The Color of the M&M does not change because the different color may change the results.

◦ Procedure: Generally it’s the lab write up, or the steps on the experiment. This is used by scientists so that they keep track of their steps and make sure they don’t forget a step.  EX:  Gather Materials  Put the M&M in a glass of water, then time how long it takes for the color of the M&M to dissolve.  Then do the same again except with a glass of soda.  Record and graph results.

 This is the step that when after you collect information from the experiment, you graph the info and analyze the data. With a title included. ◦ EX : The effect of The type of liquid, on the Time it took for the M&M to Dissolve. Type of Liquid

 Conclusion: The End Result in an experiment. It states what happened in the Analyze data phase, and if your hypothesis was correct. Ex: ◦ My hypothesis was correct because in my experiment, The M&M dissolved in the soda faster than the water.
