6 Chapter 5 (Reported Speech 1) Direct Speech: Direct Speech: .Tome said, “ I woke up feeling sick, so I stayed in bed.”  Jenny said, “ I want to go away for the weekend, but I don’t know where to go.” Reported Speech: Reported Speech:  A:That restaurant is expansive. B: It is? I thought you said it was cheap. B: It is? I thought you said it was cheap.  “ I don’t have much free time.” She said she didn’t have much free time.  When we reported speech, the main verb of the sentence is usually past. The rest of the sentence is usually past, too.

7 Chapter 6 (Report Speech 2) Direct Speech: Direct Speech:  Ann said, “ I want to go to New York next year.”  Jenny said, “ Taiwan is more exciting than Korea.”  “Don’t shout,” I said to Jim. Reported Speech: Reported Speech:  Ann said that she wants to go to New York next year. / Ann said that she wanted to go to New York next year.  Tom said that Taiwan is more exciting than Korea. / Tom said that Taiwan was more exciting than Korea.  I told Jim not to shout  If you report something and it is still true, you do not need to change the verb. We also use the infinitive (to V.) in reported speech.
