Victorian Period – 1860-1900 Industrial Revolution - Factories – more workers – more immigrants - Railroads – shipping - Construction Industry – mass produce – home prices decrease - Tennement Housing Large population became wealthy – traveled – Europe – brought back styles Begin to see varied types of housing

3 Romantic Revival Period Greek Revival Style – 1825 – 1860 Characteristics - 2 Story rectangular house – Southern Plantation Style - Symmetrical Windows - Gable roof with wide trim at cornice - Pilasters on the corners or across the whole front - Elaborate entrance – door surrounded by small windows with added wood or stone framework - Columns supporting a small or large porch – Greek most common – across entire front

7 Gothic Revival Style 1840-1880 Characteristics Pointed Arches Circular windows with ornamental carved stone Most built of wood Gingerbread – a lacy, looking, cutout wood trimming that decorated the high- peaked gothic gables

12 Italianate Style 1840-1885 Characteristics: 2 stories and square Wide overhanging hip roofs with decorative brackets or supports a the cornices Long narrow windows were arched and crowned with an inverted U shaped structure

17 Victorian Period ( 1860-1900) Named after Queen Victoria – England – Very elaborate styles 1. Mansard Style ( 1860 – 1880) Characteristics: Mansard Roof – 2 slopes on all sides – lower slope being steep and higher slope almost flat Decorated Cornices French Windows – long narrow windows that open in the middle Dormer Windows

22 Queen Anne Style 1870-1890 Characteristics: Irregular steep roof with ornamental gable Overlapping decorative shingles for siding Wraparound porches with railings and columns Turret – Circular tower that extends the entire height of the house Decorative woodwork – spindle work, brackets Bright colors
