Elements of Design Communications Technology

2 Principles vs Elements
Principles of Design describe the methods of arranging and assembling elements. Balance, Unity, Variety, Proportion, Rhythm and Grids Elements of Design are the graphic items that are the building blocks of all design Line, Shape, Mass, Texture and Color

3 Key Terms Elements of Design: Lines, shapes, mass, texture, and color
Lines: Design elements that form the shape of an image Shapes: Elementary forms that define specific areas of space Mass: A measure of volume that adds definition to shapes in a visual presentation

4 Key Terms Texture: A projection of emphasized structure or weight
Color: A visual sensation produced in the brain when the eye views various wavelengths of light Color Wheel: Colors that can be used to generate secondary colors Color Formation: Additive and subtractive systems that create secondary colors from primary colors

5 Elements of Design LINE
An element that is used to define shape, contors and outlines Can suggest mass or volume Characteristics are: Width Length Direction Focus Feeling

7 Elements of Design Examples

8 Elements of Design SHAPE
An enclosed space creates shape Can be simple or complex Categories: Geometric Organic Positive Negative Dynamic

11 Elements of Design MASS
A measure of volume that adds definition to shapes in a visual presentation. Provides a visual relationship with other elements brian canney Brian Canney BRIAN CANNEY

12 Do Now Using MS Paint (the paint program), create two documents.
The first one, use a series of lines to create your name (first and last). Use the properties of Mass to correctly design For the second document, use lines to create shapes to create your name. When you are completed, fill the shapes with color to complete the shape. Use the properties of Mass to correctly design

13 Elements of Design COLOR
Color is used to compliment all objects and tie them together Color can create emotion and leave a lasting impression Use colors that create harmony in your design

14 Elements of Design - color PRIMARY COLORS
Red, Blue and Yellow They are the building blocks used to create all other colors.

15 Elements of Design - color SECONDARY colorS
Violet, Green and Orange When two of the Primary colors are mixed together, a Secondary color is made.

16 Elements of Design - color TERTIARY colorS
Mixing the Primary and Secondary colors produces Tertiary colors.

17 Elements of Design - color COMPLIMENTARY colorS
Directly across from one another on the color wheel. Complimentary colors create visual electricity.

18 Elements of Design - color SPLIT-COMPLIMENTARY colorS
The two colors on either side of the complimentary color.

19 Elements of Design - color TRIAD colorS
These colors form a triangle within the color wheel.

20 Elements of Design - color ANALOGOUS colorS
Three colors side by side on the color wheel. Often found in nature i.e. sunset or ocean. Pleasing to the eye.

21 Elements of Design Examples

22 Elements of Design VALUE
Value is the range of lightness and darkness within a design Value can create mood/feeling Categories Tint Shade Contrast

23 Elements of Design Examples

24 Elements of Design SPACE
Space is the arrangement of objects in your design Your design can be crowded or sparse Categories Positive space Negative space Focal point Perspective

25 Elements of Design Examples

26 Elements of Design TEXTURE
Texture is used to replicate three-dimensional surfaces Produced through various drawing and media techniques Categories Real Implied (2-D)

27 Elements of Design Examples

28 Elements of Design MOTION
This element portrays the act or process of changing place, direction, orientation, or position Created using starting and stopping points or blurring of action Categories Real Implied

31 In early October, we created RISES flyers based in MS Word
In early October, we created RISES flyers based in MS Word. Using the elements of design, create a new Rises poster with only the acronym (just the letters and what they stand for. Once the flyer is created, provide an explanation based on class overview of how you used at least 4 of the concepts (you should have notes and definitions in your file to guide you): Line Shape Color Mass Motion Space Value
