The rules and regulations made and enforced by the government that regulates the conduct of people within a society. What is the law?

Without law there would be confusion and disorder.

In order to have a democratic society there must be a rule of law. The rule of law simply requires that “law should govern” Every citizen is subject to the law. No one person is above or greater than the law. THE LAW RULES

We have high ideals (an ideal is a perfect idea or model, in many cases ideals cannot be achieved but it should be tried) and goals for our legal system. Such ideals should support the following ideals: Protect basic human rights  Promote fairness  Help to resolve conflicts  Promote order and stability in a society  Represent the will of the people  Protect the rights of minorities

Laws promote the values of a society. Values are simply a society’s ideas of what is right and what is wrong - or good and evil.

Moral values Social values Economic values Political values There are many different kinds of values which relate to the law.

Moral values deal with the fundamental ideas of right and wrong. One of the more basic ideas concerning moral values is the idea that it is wrong to take a life. One of the most basic values all societies have is the right to protect live. So the government makes laws and provide services that protect life. Moral Values

However, there are exceptions to many laws and values. There are times when society believes it is okay to kill or legally take a life. These are in cases of self - defense. - It is okay to kill if you are trying to protect your own life. - If you are in the military you can take another life in the name of national defense. - Sometimes the government may take a life. Many states have executed violent criminals in extreme cases.

Economic Values Economics deal with the way a society manages its wealth (money). Laws are made to boost the economy and redistribute wealth. People receive tax breaks for home ownership and charitable contributions. There are also laws against stealing and destroying property.

Political Values Laws are also made to promote citizen participation in the government. Such an idea is important to any democratic (people rule) society. An example of political values and the law can be the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18. This happened in 1971 (26th amendment)

Another example is the Bill of Rights or the first 10 amendments (changes) to the Constitution which is supposed to protect the personal liberties and rights of the individual citizen.

Social Values and the Law Social values promote ideas that are important to people as a whole. One important social value is education. It is the law that the government must provide a quality education for its citizens at least through the “high school years”.

Furthermore, there are laws against not going to school.

Laws can change as values change. The 18th Amendment prohibited the sale and manufacturing of alcohol in the U.S. However, it was too difficult to enforce and caused many other problems.

14 years after the 18th amendment was enacted (started) it was repealed (reversed) with the 21 Amendment, which allowed for the sale and distribution of alcohol.
