2 + Changes in Society Trend – when a noticeable change takes place over time Trends in Today’s Society: The Aging Population Larger number of older people today People are living longer than they used to Better medical care Improved nutrition & health Lifelong Learning People of all ages attend college Some want a better job or a career change Distance Learning/Internet

3 + Environmental Change Society is more concerned about changes in nature Lack of fresh water in many parts of the world Extreme weather conditions causing great damage Loss f New Technology Makes life easier Entertains people Increases efficiency- (effectiveness) Strong families use technology as tool to bring the family together

4 + Changes Within the Family Single People Number is growing More people waiting to marry at older ages Less social pressure than in the past Couples More are postponing having children Having fewer children or none at all With aging population, there is a larger group of couples that have launched their children

5 + Nuclear Family Number has decreased in recent years Partly due to divorce, partly due to couples having fewer children When families have fewer children the nuclear family stage is shorter therefore raising the number of couples. Blended Family Divorce rate is going down but… Most divorced people with children remarry Larger number of blended families today

6 + Single-Parent Family Number of births to single women has grown Divorce creates many single parents Extended Families Number of adult children living with parents is increasing Older relatives move in with younger ones to share expenses, spend more time together, provide child care assistance, or need care themselves

7 + Changes in Workplace Technology & the Job Market Fewer workers needed for industrial jobs New technology can do tasks people once did As companies increase technology use, the number & types of jobs will change Service Industries A career that provides assistance to others for a fee Often pay low wages Often require workers to work day or night Many services have resulted from changes in society. Examples: Online shopping, web design, house cleaning, food delivery

8 + Global Workplace Products and services are bought and produced by people and companies all over the world. They may be made in one country and sold in another. People or companies from other countries may own businesses in our area. Improved communication and transportation makes the world seem smaller Modern technology allows many workers to perform jobs from anywhere in the world. People in other countries may be making decisions here about jobs here. Global economy-refers to ways in which the world’s economics are linked.

9 + Culture Where does culture come from? Clothing is based on the climate What people eat depends on what is available where they live People learn rules of society from family; people who live together in a society figure out their own way of doing things How does culture affect family life? Family members learn the customs and traits of their culture A family takes on the ways of life that are common in its society

10 + Diversity Variety in the sense that people are all different in one way or another Qualities that make each culture unique: Languages Attitudes Customs Daily routines

11 + How do families teach culture? Each generation passes along what it has learned to the next Without teaching, people would not know what behaviors are and are not acceptable Empathy – the ability to put yourself in another person’s situation Cultural Heritage Beliefs, customs, and traits that are important to a particular ethnic group Every family’s heritage should be valued You should be able to feel good about your own heritage and still value the heritage of others

12 + ASSIGNMENT Write a paragraph answering these two questions: Why do people often fear what they do not understand? What kinds of behavior might this cause?
