A family headed by a single parent Choice, death, divorce, desertion, legal separation Discuss advantages and disadvantages

Either or both spouses may have been married before One or both may bring children into the relationship Discuss advantages and disadvantages

What are reasons parents choose adoption> Why might birth parents choose to place a child for adoption? Discuss legal aspects

8 FAMILY STRUCTURES FOSTER FAMILIES
Provides a child with substitute care, usually temporary Why are children placed in foster care? How are foster homes evaluated? Disadvantages, advantages….

9 FAMILY STRUCTURES EXTENDED FAMILIES
Several generations of a family live together (remember the Walton's?) This was the norm in prior generations What situations might lead to this structure today? How many of you live w/in driving distance of grandparents? Advantages, disadvantages…

10 ROLES A SET OF BEHAVIORS RELATED TO A CERTAIN FUNCTION YOU ASSUME IN LIFE. Most people perform several roles at the same time; give examples How do we learn roles? How have roles changed in the last 50 years? Give specific examples related to labor division in the home, careers, etc.

11 FAMILY LIFE CYCLE BEGINNING STAGE
Establishment of the family unit when a couple marries Must adjust to life with another person Routines, roles are established Length of this stage varies

12 FAMILY LIFE CYCLE EXPANDING STAGE Begins when first child is expected
Focus shifts to the needs of children New roles Financial shift Balancing work and family

13 FAMILY LIFE CYCLE DEVELOPING STAGE
Family grows with the birth of additional children Children start school/new challenges/friends, activities Adolescent children bring major challenges! Finances are stretched

14 FAMILY LIFE CYCLE LAUNCHING STAGE Children begin to leave home
Challenge for parents and kids Husband and wife must refocus on their marriage Some couples face the dual challenge of caring for aging parents Must learn to view their children as adults

15 FAMILY LIFE CYCLE THE AGING STAGE
Couple breaks away from work, full or partial retirement Health issues may arise Housing needs may change Grand parenting Discuss the guidelines given in your text. Would you add others?
