Conflict, Stress and Coping What are the top three things that stress you out the most?

What is stress? Physical pressure and strain that results from demands or changes in the environment Stress arises whenever we have to readjust…any kind of change can cause stress.

Types of Stress What can be terribly difficult for one person can make another feel interested and alive. On a scale of 1 (being least stressful) to 10 (most stressful) rate the following…

Going to a party Being in a wedding Going to prom or homecoming First day of school Graduation Vacation Starting a new school, (college) First date Road test Christmas Meeting your boy/girl friend’s family Going home for the weekend Starting a new job Having to speak at an event

LOCUS OF CONTROL Page 473-475 Locus of Control Scale - how much do you feel you are in control of situations in your life Scoring: circle the response that matches the response on the scale. Count up the circles. That is your score. EXTERNAL: 16-40 INTERMEDIATE: 7-15 INTERNAL: 0-6

Coping and Control Some may have high scores and feel less stress Some may have lower scores and feel more stress… This has a lot to do with: lifestyle, experiences, personality traits, and locus of control. Locus of control is the how much you “feel” you are in control over events in your life. External locus of control – others, fate, bad luck determine your life Internal locus of control – you, effort, positive attitude, support network determine your life **People with strong faith often test more external, but this is not negative since they place their control in a trusted belief.

Good Stress Good Stress is called EUSTRESS It leads to something desirable. New goals, working hard, practicing for SAT’s, etc. Applying to colleges, visiting colleges, etc.

Bad Stress DISTRESS is bad stress Negative effects are great….confusion, inability to make decisions, avoidance of people, and even illness. When stress overwhelms our ability to cope...it is distress. How we view our problems has a lot to do with how stress affects you.

Your Stress Test Page 471 in text Add “applying to colleges” instead of expulsion from school for 89 pts. Identify events that have/or will happen to you within this year. Total up your points.
