4 Provide students and parents with HS graduation requirements. Explain the 4 year plan. Information needed to make a smooth transition from MS to HS.

Geography, W. History, U.S. History, Government, and Economics Social Studies (W. Geography, W. History, U.S. History, Government, and Economics)

7 Includes the same classes as the Recommended plan with the addition of the 4 Advanced Measures. 3 years of Foreign Language. Examples of measures: AP exams (score 3 or higher) Dual Enrollment (grade B or higher) Independent Studies Class

8 Credits are earned when a student has completed the grade and attendance requirements for the class. Grade placement by credits earned: 0 to 5.5 credits 9 th grade 6-11.5 credits10 th grade 12 to 17.5 credits11 grade 18 to 26 credits 12 th grade 26 state credits are needed to graduate.

9 Grade Point Average (GPA) - A cumulative average taken from course grades. Class Rank – a student’s position according to their GPA. GPA’s are calculated at the end of the semester in January and again in June.

10 Pre-AP and AP classes are calculated at 110%. (must have MS teacher approval) Core classes are calculated at 100%. Summer school, Nova Net, correspondence courses, locally developed courses (such as TAKS tutorials or teacher’s aide), or Dual Enrollment are not calculated into GPA.

11 Earning Credit Middle School vs High School You must pass the class to earn credit. If you fail, you will have to repeat the course. If you fail a class, you will lose the opportunity to be in band, athletics, ROTC or any elective! In order to participate in UIL activities you must earn at least 5 credits per year.

12 9 th graders take Reading and Math. 10 th graders take ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. 11 th graders take the Exit Level ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. If you are concerned about your child’s TAKS history, please make an appointment to see a counselor.

13 Gifted & Talented (GT) students are required to participate in extended learning projects and must be in 1 Pre-AP / AP or an Independent Study course. Students who are currently enrolled in 504 or Special Education will continue to receive services at high school.

14 Tutorials for core subjects are available before and after school. Tutorials are available Tuesday through Friday during Boomerang Advisory class. Please encourage your student to attend tutorials when they are having trouble.

15 Communication Application (Speech) will be offered if there is enough interest. Session: June 15 th through June 25th 8:00 am until 2:55 pm $100 Please notify the FHS Counseling Office if you are interested 830 393 5370

16 Early College Center The ECC will be located in the new HS campus. Nursing and Aerospace Academy Beginning next school year, 11 th and 12 th graders will have the opportunity to enroll in and begin classes in the Nursing and Aerospace Academy. Make an appointment with your child’s counselor next year for more information.

17 Counselors were at the Middle School today, March 23, to speak to students and distribute registration materials. They were given: 4 year planner 4 year planner FHS course catalog course selection sheet Course Catalog is now available online at: http://www.fisd.us/high/counselorcorner/index.htm Please return course selection sheets and the 4 year plan to the HS and MS counselors on March 25, 2009.
